Psychological Evaluation and Background
SEXUAL PREFERENCE: closeted bisexual (curious of the other gender, denies it)
PERSONALITY TRAITS: People who first meet Lyric might assume that he is one of those people with a lack of personality. This is not the case. He merely dislikes showing his emotions to others. He is a stoic, dispassionate individual on the surface, with a tendency to resort to sarcasm and humor when in awkward situations, or when it is necessary for him to show emotion. He enjoys to laugh and smile, but outside of that, his facial expressions are minimum at best. He feels weak when showing anger or sadness, much less confusion or pain, but he is an individual who feels it often, particularly confusion. Lyric is not a charismatic man by any means, and while he isn't completely awkward, in certain situations he simply doesn't understand how to react. In such situations, he often resorts to cruelty or mockery, or silence.
It should be noted, however, that one thing that gets a rise out of Lyric is adrenaline--he gets a rush from any sort of danger or cheap thrill. He is confrontational at times, relishing fights and challenges, displays traits of recklessness. He takes unnecessary risks often, and it doesn't matter to him if he is putting himself or his allies in danger by doing so. Despite being such a stoic individual, Lyric is not a heartless one. He is merely distrustful, and do to past relationships, he cannot express feelings of compassion, friendship, or love very easily.
KNOWN HISTORY: Ivan Shikov and Helina Russo were not in love, at least not five years into their marriage. They both hailed from aristocratic, traditional Russian families, and the two of them married after a brief time period, more out of political gain than genuine affection. Five years after their marriage, Helina became pregnant with Zivon, desperately trying to keep Ivan's loyalty intact. He had become increasingly aloof towards his wife, and she began to worry that he was having affairs.
Zivon's birth did not, however, fix any problems in their marriage. If anything, it made them considerably worse. Ivan was young, and he didn't want a child. In fact, he insisted that Helina got an abortion, but she refused. Even at a young age, Zivon was treated with dispassion by both his father and his mother. In many respects, Helina blamed her son for the deteriorating condition of their marriage.
He grew up in a cold household. Both of his parents had jobs that required them to be out of the house for extended periods of time. His father was a brain surgeon and his mother was a business representative. While his education was not lacking (he had the best that money could buy) he was not treated with any amount of affection throughout most of his childhood. In attempts to get attention, he would often do things that would force his parents to acknowledge him. Zivon was a troubled child, to put it lightly. In his youth, he was fighting and drinking frequently, and although he wasn't an idiot by any means, he was attention starved. His parents become fed-up with his antics, and sent him to a boarding school in Moscow when he was fourteen. This lasted only a year, and by the time he was fifteen, he had been expelled and was back in the house.
His father's drinking worsened, and it was no secret that he was having affairs while Helina was away on business. She turned a blind eye to it, but Zivon didn't. One night, he confronted his father about the fact, feeling years of pent-up frustration building inside of him. His father had said something sarcastic and degrading towards him, and Lyric had finally snapped. "Really? And I guess you're better because you're fiddlyfarting the maid when mom's gone?" His father, of course, hadn't taken this comment very well. Ivan Shikov struck his son for the first time, but it was certainly the last. It was the first time Zivon shapeshifted, and he did so with so, so much anger. He tore his claws into his father's face, and upon realizing what he had done, he panicked. He ran from the house and his unconscious father.
Perhaps he would have been taken into the Menagerie then, or even killed, had it not been for Lesta. At this point in time, Zivon was merely attempting to escape his past. He was running, terrified of UNIT and the Menagerie. Somehow, he ended up in the darker parts of Moscow, the streets that were overrun with prostitutes, gangs, and drugs. He attracted attention, dressed in a rich man's clothes, slouched in a way that made him a target. Lesta wanted to rob him, and he would have, except for when the two of them got into a grappling match, Zivon shifted again.
"My God, man! You can't do that in public!" Lesta had snarled in spit-fire Russian, stumbling away from the mountain lion, as Zivon hissed and circled. "C'mon, out of the way! Off the street before someone sees!"
Lesta wasn't as bad as many of the cutthroats in this part of town, and he was also a shifter. Zivon interested him, and as a result, Lesta took Zivon "under his wing", if you will. Zivon fell into this life well. He never spoke of his past, and no one asked. Lesta was a member of a gang, but this gang was only for shapeshifters, and although UNIT was a constant danger, they managed to evade it. For the most part. Every one in the gang had an alias, and no one knew anyone's real name. This is where Zivon became Lyric for the first time in his life, for no other reason than Lesta said, "You look like a Lyric!"
The gang was involved in something completely and utterly illegal. Not drugs or theft or human trafficking, but shapeshifter fighting. They arranged "matches" in the "underground", and people paid money and bet on the fighters. It was simple fighting. There was only one rule: do not kill. Within months of being a member of this gang, they singled Lyric out as a fighter, and he was thrown into it. He found a love for it, for the fighting and the clarity that came with it, and he quickly climbed the ranks. There is a likelihood that he would have never looked back, would have never gone back (he was about eighteen at this point in time) if it weren't for the fact that UNIT was tipped off about the gang, and many of the members were captured or killed.
Lyric narrowly escaped, and because he had no where else to go, he returned home. However, it was a strange landscape. His father knew what he was, and so did his mother, but they spoke nothing of it. They looked at him with fear and contempt, but they did not force him out of their household. His father continued to drink and have affairs. His mother continued to distance herself, wishing she were another woman. Lyric didn't want to stay, not really--he just wanted money from them, to be honest. But there was a girl.
His parents had adopted a girl named Leena Kozlov. At least, that's what they told him. Leena was a wild girl. She was broken in as many ways as a person could be broken. She was worse than Lyric had ever been, but for some reason, Ivan loved her. Ivan treated her like a daughter, like someone he cared about. Lyric mother's hated her, but that was irrelevant. Within the course of the next year, he fell in love with this girl, this insane girl who was set to self-destruct. What Lyric didn't know, however, was the real reason why she was there. Ivan said they had adopted her, but in reality, she was his daughter, the progeny of one of his affairs. He had merely taken her in because of the fact Leena's mother, Kisa Kozlov, could no longer support her. The reason they lied to him, and everyone else, was because of the fact no one outside of the family knew of Ivan's affairs. And being that he was often involved in politics and had a reputation to upkeep, they didn't plan to tell them that Leena was Ivan's daughter.
Lyric didn't know this, of course, or he would have never fallen for her. Leena knew it, but she didn't care. She led him on, teased him, tortured him. She took him to the worst parts of town, got him in fight after fight, found him drink after drink and drug after drug. She destroyed him in many respects. He was not a bad man, but his love condemned him. Leena didn't know how to love, and the fact he was her half-brother only condemned him more. Whatever feelings he felt for her, well, they were doomed.
One night, his father got particularly drunk.
"I see the way you look at that girl, Zivon. You look at her like you're a city-boy seeing the stars for the first time." Ivan laughed, loud and long, his voice slurring with the affects of alcohol. His eyes were glazed. "You're a son of a bitch, you know? You messed me up pretty bad, but you're still my son, even if I don't care about you. I thought you should know, though, that she's your sister. Even you deserve to know that."
The news devastated him. Shortly afterwards, his parents called UNIT, to have their son apprehended for being a shapeshifter.
