Kat shuffled out of the mess hall train-car awkwardly, moving to close the door behind her she moved down the ramp sideways as she glanced around; satisfied that no one was watching her as she reached the bottom. She had opted to not wear shoes, the dusty ground feeling a bit freeing as she walked towards the main area, it wasn't like she had the best shoes anyway, but she didn't feel like going with one shoe, even if it only was for the rest of the night. She was definitely excited to get this awkward thing off of her foot even if it had only been a few days, the medics had wanted to make sure she didn't tear the ligaments even more so.
A small gaggle of the other tenderfoots her age were heading in the general direction she was as she folded her arms over her middle before one of them called to her. "Bonfire at the usual spot, come on Kat! You usually don't go! Sunset!" she glanced to them and gave only a shadow of a smile, as if being included weren't unusual for her - she usually refused to go to such things. She shrugged in their direction as they waved to her and continued, though as they moved they revealed her savior from earlier this week walking towards her. Whether he was distracted by something ont he ground or he was trying to avoid others she didn't know, but she stayed where she was, as he happened to walking right for her.
As he got closer to her she cleared her throat so he looked up to her, a slightly surprised look on his face as she lifted her hand in a half-attempted "hi" as the corners of her mouth kind of played between a smile an a normal relaxed face; well ... as relaxed as she could manage. She didn't know why she felt so nervous around him, though she let her eyes dance away briefly before forcing herself to not be so rude. She was a jumble of nerves and it bugged her that she couldn't keep her normal demeanor as she lifted a hand to push her mess of blonde waves behind her ear.
"Hey"
Oh come on Kat! It wasn't like he knew that you left that present for him at his train-car, knocking on the door to fling yourself off the ramp and run around the side to practically hold your breath and wait for him to find it. Afterwards she felt like a fool and practically had a heart attack and thought to herself that maybe she could go and grab it before he got to the door. She had went to take a step out from around the corner before she flew back as the door slid open, covering her mouth with her hand as she leaned against the side of the rail-car, slowing her breathing as she peeked around the corner, finding him kneeling over the small cloth wrapped sack of food she had managed to collect after not eating half of her portions for the past two days. As he looked one way she ducked back again, sneaking away as quickly as she could without making noise before he decided to investigate.
No. No, he didn't know it was her.
"So um, I never got to thank you for .. ya know .. coming to get me the other day. I mean I know you were told to but ..," she shrugged, "a lot of people would've blown off a rescue thing. At least most of them our age," she said as she flicked her eyes here and there, finally settling on his face right at the end. "And .. I also forgot that I didn't even catch your name?"

The plan had been for a typical evening. Aurelio would grab something to eat, then hit the desert. He’d hunt down small lizards and rodents trying to enjoy the cool air. It would be gloriously quiet and solitary. Perfect for sorting himself out after another day of various frustrations, and for being able to hear himself think. Mornings were hardly his own anymore, but at least dusk could usually be spent alone.
Except Katalea knew that was routine. The macaw woman had long been pushing for him to find more social pursuits, and tonight she decided to put her foot down. After all, tonight was another one of those tenderfoot parties.
Aurelio knew of his peers’ little bonfires. He suspected they were in response to adult-only gatherings, the kind for which preparation included a raid on the Speakeasy. Personally, if it wasn't a mandatory Ring-wide meeting, Aurie avoided it. That sort of thing was for people who grew up without having to either use the night to their advantage, or turn in early so they could be up before the sun. People who grew up at their leisure.
But the scrawny boy had learned to never invoke Katalea’s retaliation, however good-natured it was. She would know if he slipped away. Better to suffer immature company than to spark her plotting mode.
And so he followed the trail slowly, mumbling foul Spanish and scuffing his feet. It was no wonder he didn’t notice someone waiting for him until he heard their throat clear. He looked up and froze, eyebrows raised suspiciously. But the caustic remarks never came; in fact, little blond chica stumbled over her words, and even thanked him. Though he didn’t know it, Auri’s shoulders loosened a little. Perhaps she’d only been difficult before because of the circumstances, which he’d forgotten were largely his own fault.
“Uh, you’re welcome, I guess. Wasn’t really a big deal.” Even he was surprised that she would want to talk to him again. Was she planning to follow him around for the evening? He wasn’t much of an acquaintance, but for all he knew, he was the best option she had. At least she wasn’t likely to be obnoxiously chipper.
Given the heatedness of their conversation, it didn’t seem that odd that they still didn’t know each other’s names. “Oh, it’s Aurelio. Aurelio Quezada.” It felt so small, but he’d learned soon enough that listing off Aurelio Jorge Quezada Gomez drew funny looks at best, or jokes at worst. And often comments or questions about Mexico. Aurelio had barely even heard of Mexico before coming here, but now everyone seemed to think he was from there.
“And you are?”

She shrugged akwardly as he blew it off, though at least he had actually said 'youre welcome' and not been obnoxious like he had been the last time they were obviously together. Maybe her daydreams about the boy were right? Maybe he was more gruff on the outside to hide what was on the inside? Ugh, maybe she should stop listening to the girls talk about their romantic fantasies of the boys they wanted to find. Boys were so stupid sometimes.
Wait, he had asked her something. Her brain caught up then, her name after his! Aurelio, hm? "It's Katrien," she said before she realized he had offered his full name and chewed on the side of her lip for a second before she followed up, "Katrien Lowenthal."
She kinda swung her shoulders a bit, rotating a bit on her one good foot more so than the oddly splinted one as she looked behind her back to where the others were headed before she looked back at him. Her head was slightly tilted up and her teeth gripped the side of her lip again in her nervous habit as she fought the bubbling feeling in her stomach. "So are you going to the bonfire?" she asked him, mildly hoping he was since he was vaguely headed in that direction anyway. " If you are do you wanna walk together?" she added, fighting the blush that was trying to work its way up her neck and into her cheeks.
Heck, the worst he could say was no, even though the thought made her stomach twist in displeasure at the thought as she brought her arms to fold under her chest, her fingers lightly gripping her arms as she waited for what seemed like forever for his answer. What was with her anyway? It's not like she liked him! No, she just wanted someone to go with and maybe ... maybe she could become friend with him? She was lying to herself though as she watched him, her blue eyes trying to read his face as she stood there.

Sure enough, she showed intent to hang around with him. Which, again, she actually didn’t sound like the worst person to do so with. She was showing none of her previous hostility, and as far as he knew she wasn’t giggly or otherwise sporting obnoxious behaviors a lot of girls did. Problem was, that was it. Her social skills seemed to be about equal with his, which would explain why the conversation was already hobbling worse than she was.
It was bragging points. Katalea would inevitably interrogate him when he got home, at that smile would already be there, sure that he’d failed miserably. At this rate, he could look her right in the eye and inform her that he’d chatted up a girl before he’d even arrived at the party.
On second thought, it was best not to highlight any interactions with girls.
But yes, there were benefits. Katrien was basically guaranteed to be better at parties than him. With her to model off of, maybe he wouldn’t look completely lost. “Sure,” he chimed, voice cracking from the forced cheerfulness. Aurelio quickly replaced his wide-eyed horror with what only just missed being a scowl. In other words, his default expression. “Yeah, I thought I would go check it out. Let’s go.”
Aurelio tended to walk slowly, but even he had to check his normal pace to make sure she could keep up. It made him self-conscious of his hands and how they hung loosely at his sides, but he wasn’t sure what else to do with them. Her glanced at her and again felt wildly incompetent at interaction. There was enough of a walk that remaining quiet the whole time would be painful, but he wasn't sure how to combat it. Perhaps he should show some sympathy, especially considering how he’d acted last time. Or was it better to act like there wasn’t a problem? Personally, Aurelio would hate to have everyone constantly worry over him and remind him of something that affected his ability to be useful. Especially if it was such a silly way of hurting yourself. “So um…how’s your foot? Are they letting off easy on chores or anything?”

She was kind of relieved she now had someone to attend the party with, a bit of tension dropping in her shoulders and her brows unfurrowing were given signs that she was in a little better spirits knowing she wasn't going to show up alone. A voice in the back of her head said she shouldn't have cared whether or not she showed up by herself anyway - she was independent and always had been since her parents basically disowned her. The thought re-gave her a nasty twist in her gut, her fingers dug a little bit into the arms of her skin.
She had turned to follow by then, her gait a little awkward, noticing that he slowed his own - keeping his eyes forward most of the time with a spare glance over at her once as they walked in mostly silence. He broke it though, soon after, and she was surprised as she let her light eyes look over to him, her blonde locks falling around her face as she let her expression relax before glancing forward. Shoulder blades lifted and fell in a small shrug, "Kinda ... I have been helping with cooking prep and a few other things that don't require standing. Definitely no water gathering though," she said with a small lilt of amusement at the end before she cleared her throat and looked down again as if it were the stupidest joke on earth.
"So ... I didn't peg you for the party type," she commented as they came closer to the already started fire, the group of people sitting down off to the side in a circle. One of the girls waving excitedly over at them and motioning them to come over.
'Hurry up slow pokes! You're gonna miss the fun stuff!'
"God only knows what that is.." she mumbled as she looked to the side at him as she grinned a little as they made their way over. The circle was opened for them to sit down as she moved to plop down and looked to the girl that had been loud and about hurrying them up. She was pretty sure her name was Maria.
'Sooo ... first order of business!' she said with a grin before a small chorus of giggles went around the rest of the few females that sat there (minus Kat) as the males grinned a little bit. Maria stuck her hand into a sack bag she carried around and pulled out an empty glass bottle. 'Spin the bottle!'
It felt like the color drained and yet rushed to her face all at the same time as her eyes wnet wide. Oh god she did not want to kiss anyone .. oh she just should've stayed in her traincar ... WHY didnt she just stay in her train car?!
