The walk to the inn was as long one, especially after a long day of scouting duties, but Casey never failed to make the trek out to the Breathelight whenever he could. His visits had become less frequent, down to once a week, twice if he was lucky. Casey worried what the other Fulsi might think he was sneaking off to do if he was spotted too often— spies had always been a threat to the Ring, and the last thing Casey wanted was to have his loyalty questioned.
Since Charm had become Alpha, he’d been doing his best to show that he was a loyal ring member. That meant volunteering for more patrols, and wandering off less. But he couldn’t stay away from the inn for long. He’d slipped away under the cover of darkness, and although he was tired, Casey walked with more spring in his step than he’d had all week.
As he finally approached the decrepit old building, he wondered if Sascha would even be there to greet him. He often went out and hunted at night, so Casey hoped that if he wasn’t there, that he would be back soon. He climbed the shaky stairs and walked along the safest routes on the creaky floor, long since committed to memory, until he ended up at the familiar door that marked Sascha’s room. He turned the handle and walked inside, and immediately froze in his tracks.
A little boy screamed and turned in fright, staring at him in horror from his place next to the window. Casey didn’t hesitate and drew his skinning knife from its sheath, which in turn drove the little boy to wailing helplessly, pressed up against the wall. “P-please, don’t hurt me!” he cried, “I don’t have no food or nothing, please!” Tears streamed down his face and he tried to hide behind his arms.
“Be quiet!” Casey hissed, walking into the room and rushing to the closet. He threw the doors open only to find it empty. He raced to the small adjoining room and found it empty too. Casey turned back to the boy, his heart pounding with both fear and rage. “Who are you? Who are you here with?” He demanded, stepping closer until the boy shrunk to the ground in terror. “Where is Sascha?! Where is the man who lives here?” Casey’s mind was racing now. A child was rarely alone out here… if they had no family, they usually had a Ring, and if they were rogues, they had other rogues to protect them. Had rogues taken the Inn? Were the others just out hunting, or even on their way back to the kid now? And if they were… where was Sascha?
The thought that something might have happened to him was more than Casey could bear, and he crouched down in front of the boy, pointing the knife at him. He didn’t have it in him to actually hurt the boy, but he hoped the threat was enough for the kid to quit his wailing and make some sense. “TALK! Where is he?!”

Sascha had just gotten back from a slightly disappointing hunt; it had been a few days since he'd had a full meal, due mostly to the fact that he felt he couldn't fly very far from the Inn. He wanted to stay as close as possible in case his new ward needed him, but the hunting around these parts wasn't good. The most he could do was a few rodents, and the deer had long been scared off by the recent presence of Rogues in the area. Which doubly worried Sascha, when before he only had to worry about Rogues finding his empty room, now Fletcher would be there to be found. The thought send Sascha's heart pounding, and a sickening feeling in his belly grew worse.
He had just reached the top of the stairs when he heard muffled voices coming from his room. It was as if someone lit a fire under him, and the bat anthro didn't hesitate for a moment to burst through the door. He saw Fletcher cowering in a corner, and a strange hulking shadow standing over him, the pale moonlight in the room only illuminating the glint of a knife. On instinct, Sascha rushed forward and grabbed the man by the collar of his shirt and hauled him backwards, twisting around and grabbing his shoulder with one hand and the knife-wielding hand with the other. With one surge of strength Sascha lifted the man off his feet and slammed him to the ground, effectively pinning him (and the knife) to the Inn floor.
He had leaned forward and was about to sink his fangs into the man's neck when he suddenly recognized the scent cloying his nostrils, rolling off the man in waves, and the sound of his voice as he yelled in alarm. "Casey?" Sascha asked, immediately pulled back, though he didn't realize he still kept his hold on Casey. "What are you doing here? You are not supposed to come for another day. And why you try to scare Fletcher?

Casey didn’t hear anyone come into the room, so he screamed when suddenly he was grabbed and thrown to the ground with a force that knocked the wind out of him. He felt his heart racing out of control as he was pinned down by his attacker, a hand gripping the wrist that held his only weapon. Casey struggled against him, trying to push the larger attacker away, but to no avail. The man lunged forward and Casey saw sharp white fangs in the dim light. He shut his eyes tight and tried to look away, hoping the rogue would at least end him quickly.
Wait... fangs? Casey felt his adrenaline rush start to wear off, and only then did he realize that he was in the inn, and a man with fangs was attacking him in the darkness of his room.. it only made sense that it wasn’t a stranger after all. It had all just happened so quickly that Casey hadn’t put the obvious facts together until that moment. Sascha’s voice confirmed it was him, and Casey released the grip on his knife and sighed with relief. “Oh god, Sascha! It’s you… You scared me… half to death,” He spoke, his words scattered from trying to catch his breath. Casey tried not to think about how much closer to death he might have been if Sascha had only recognized him after he’d sunk his fangs into his throat.
Instead, he thought about how happy he was that Sascha was there, alive, and unhurt by imaginary rogues. Casey moved to hug him, before he realized that the bat anthro was still pinning him to the ground. “You wanna let me up?” He asked, an amused smile on his face. Sascha looked confused for a moment before he noticed that he still had Casey held tight to the ground, and quickly released him with an apologetic look. Casey sat up and nearly leapt on Sascha, wrapping his arms around him in an embrace that was probably a little more enthusiastic than usual. “I traded patrols with a different scout this time, so I showed up early,” He explained, pouring all his previous worry and anxieties about Sascha possibly being injured or worse into the crushing hug.
Casey had forgotten all about the little boy he’d been threatening until Sascha brought him up again. “Oh, right.. Fletcher is it? Sorry, I just saw him and thought maybe…”He began, pulling away slightly so Sascha could see his face and possibly breathe a little. “You weren’t here, and I thought he was a rogue’s kid, and that maybe they did something to you…” Casey trailed off again, lifting a hand to stroke Sascha’s scruffy cheek, taking in all the features of his face as if he hadn’t seen him in years. “I’m just.. I’m glad you’re okay, He finished, giving Sascha a kiss that lingered for just a moment— the fact that he hadn’t gotten to do that in nearly a week, and the happy fact that Sascha was still safe and sound made the kiss even sweeter.
And then he remembered Fletcher again and pulled away, clearing his throat and fidgeting slightly with the awkward realization that the tiny stranger was still staring at him in complete terror. “Sooo… who’s the kid anyways?”

"Scuzaţi," I'm sorry, Sascha said, grinning sheepishly when he realized he was still pinning Casey to the ground, and let him up. It wasn't a second before Casey had grabbed him in a tight hug before he'd even gotten to his feet. Sascha laughed and pulled Casey tight against him, burrowing his face in his neck for a brief moment before Casey pulled away.
Sascha leaned into Casey's hand as he trailed it across his cheek, trying to focus. He hadn't seen Casey in weeks, and what little time they had together was much too short. He sighed, a gentle sound reflecting his comfort, but shook his head vigorously when Casey expressed his concern. "No, I am fine. The rogues have not been back for a while," he said, wincing as he thought of the men who had nearly killed him; he could still feel the knife carving into his back.
Casey's lingering kiss banished the memories, and he found himself grinning and almost returning the kiss after Casey pulled away, until he too remembered Fletcher. Sascha's eyes widened and he blushed slightly, hurrying over to the poor boy's side.
"Fletcher," he said, resting a hand on Fletcher's shoulder, as he still seemed visibly shaken. "This is my friend Casey; he did not mean to scare you, only to protect me. He is a good man, and will not hurt you, okay?" Sascha turned back to Casey and smiled, gently tousling Fletcher's hair. "The 'kid' is name Fletcher. I am taking care of him now," Sascha said, glancing down at the small boy he'd already grown quite fond of with a wide grin.

Casey watched the two silently, confusion etched across his face. He was speechless as he tried to sort the situation out in his mind. Casey hoped he had misunderstood. “For a while then, you mean?” He asked suddenly, before he could hold the words back. Panic fluttered in his chest at the thought that he might have to be responsible for this child he didn’t know. Sascha’s expression told him that this might be the case.
Casey sighed and glanced at Fletcher with a pang of guilt in his chest. The poor kid was terrified and obviously had nowhere to go. It wasn’t right to throw him out on his own, or to bring him back to the rings that were more danger than they were worth, but keeping him was a terrifying idea for the Fulsi scout.
He gave a small polite cough and looked back to Sascha, inclining his head and glancing to the doorway. “Sascha, can we step outside? To talk about this?” He asked. Without waiting for an answer, he turned on his heel and rushed through the doorway. Once outside, he leaned back against the hallway wall and took a deep breath.
How was he going to convince Sascha to get rid of the kid without crushing both of them? “I’m just not ready for something like this… we can barely take care of ourselves, right?” he whispered, trying to sort out the racing thoughts in his mind before Sascha appeared. “We’re not his parents… we’ll never be! I mean, I can’t be. Ugh, I don’t know!” He groaned, running his hands through his hair.
This was going to be more difficult than he thought.

Sascha was confused by Casey's reaction, by the startled look of confusion and steadily spreading panic. He had expected Casey to be surprised, but the look on his face betrayed more than just surprise. Sascha wasn't sure how to feel just quite yet and he nodded in agreement as Casey asked to discuss it outside. He didn't want Fletcher to feel unwanted, especially after all the boy had been through. "We will not be so far, just outside. If you need for something, just call." Sascha said as he patted the boy's shoulder before following Casey out into the hall.
He heard the tail end of what Casey said, apparently talking to himself. Sascha was taken aback by the seeming frustration in his voice, brows furrowing in concern. He was unsettled and slightly on edge at what he heard. He had been waiting for weeks to share this news with Casey, to share this possibility of a new life with him. He took a moment to collect his thoughts before he stepped further into the hall and shut the door behind him, turning to Casey. "I do not want us to be his parent," he said, though deep down he wanted nothing more. He spoke slowly, trying to bridge the confusing language barrier that still existed (frustratingly so) between them. "But I am his protector now. I will keep him safe," he said with a steely determination in his voice that surprised even him. His brows raised slightly at the edge in his own voice, but he couldn't understand why Casey was acting so strangely. "I know maybe it scare you to have to take care of another on top of us. But think how much he is scared, Casey. I can not just let him be alone. Not in this place."

Casey cringed the whole time Sascha was speaking. Not because he didn’t want to hear what he was saying, but because he knew Sascha was right. But Casey couldn’t stifle the panic that was rising in his chest. “I know, you’re right, but you can’t just… we didn’t even talk about it! Do you understand how big a decision this is?” He asked, pacing back and forth a few steps. “It changes everything! And we’re supposed to be partners! Making decisions together!”
He looked back to Sascha, his gaze pleading. “It’s not just taking care of another person.. he’s.. a liability! What if he attracts danger? What if we can’t get away? What if you would rather put yourself at stake rather than leave him behind?” He was spiraling out of control now, imagining any and every situation that could go terribly wrong.
Casey took a deep breath and backed up to the wall again, just to keep himself from pacing anymore. “I know you want to keep him safe, but I want to keep us safe. He’s scared, but I’m terrified.” He pushed away from the wall and stepped forward to take Sascha’s hands in his, hoping he could stop his own hands from trembling.
“I don’t know if I can take care of anyone. I’ll mess everything up.”
