Watching the trio of mutated women, one wouldn’t be inclined to guess that the small blotchy one was acting as a guide of sorts. She seemed occupied in nothing other than animated chatter with her companions. Recently, Persephone had forgotten all about the guilt of trying to ‘replace’ her old pack, the fear of getting to know people who might die and leave her all alone again. That all seemed like such stupid reasons to deprive herself. The nudibranch anthro was already quite established with Kearie; Zora she wasn’t particularly familiar with, but thus far she hadn’t show any signs of being unpleasant. Quite the contrary.
Of course, one might say it was even necessary, this involvement in the conversation. Seph’s mind had to be kept firmly on other things, if she was going to track the source of that nightmare scent.
It was a simple task, anyway. The aroma was completely out of place here, among all the rot and rust. It was of a different world, one of antiseptic and cold metal and softly whirring machines and pristine white. Oh, but that purity was so unwholesome; it was a reminder of the people of that world, who had cast aside all human sympathy and every code of ethics ever written. A cloying sterility that could never drown out all the blood and screams and pain and terror and…
Stop. Stopstopstop.
Such thoughts never left her completely alone, but they were never allowed very far. Over time Persephone had learned to keep them tucked carefully away, blurred and lacking details. Even in her sleep those memories were starting to leave her alone, at least overtly. It was almost as if she had forgotten a whole chink of her life. It was the only way to keep herself together. To stay the buoyant person everyone thought she was by nature.
Cricket!
It was the perfect distraction. Immediately she was after the swift little speck, feeling a little smug when she snagged it on the second swoop of her practiced hands. Seph hadn’t really bothered to catch many insects since joining the Nakoma; the food supply was enough that one didn’t really have to resort to entomophagy. But now, with winter on its way, anything she could use to put on a little weight was valuable. The fact that most of her tribefellows were disgusted by the idea made insects the perfect candidate for this. She wouldn’t feel guilty eating them if no one else wanted them.
This little bout of bug hunting barely took her off course, and Seph was already focused on the scent as she stashed away her catch. When they’d started out today, Persephone hadn’t been able to say where the drop had been made, just a general direction. But now, what had earlier been one big blur was now starting to split into separate traces, all tangled together but distinguishable. One smell in particular was starting to seem related to the one she was following, and it wasn’t a good sign. Not in the least.
Figures the Keepers weren’t going to hand over valuable supplies without getting some fun out of it.
“Hold up a moment.” Absently, Seph leaned with one hand against Kearie’s shoulder. Her rhinophores were in a flurry of twitches, stirring the air to better analyze it. This definitely wasn’t something she wanted to mention until she was absolutely sure. But the more she grasped for another possibility, the more she was sure she knew where they needed to go. “Great news, you lot. The goods are at the hospital.”
Zora bounced along happily, long hare-like feet giving her the noted spring in her step. Her staff was slung over her shoulder, one arm draped over it, the other swinging at her side as she strolled jauntily alongside her small scouting party. The two Nakoma with her were Medics and she’d been assigned to escort them on a party to scour for some medical supplies. They’d been running low, apparently, and what with the Fulsi under new management—it meant they had to double on security and not take any risks.
Zora had seen the two other Anthros hanging about and they seemed good friends, and though she was plenty good at making new friends and hadn’t a care in the world, sometimes these trips could be a little tense and worrisome. But Zora found it easy enough to cast an ear to the world around them, what with her keen hearing from her tall satellite like ears that twitched and swiveled at the slightest sound, and listen to the girls chatter at the same time. Persephone, the fish-like girl with not much more than a mouth for a face was telling a story about how her cat lost an eye—Zora couldn’t resist breaking out into laughter at the somewhat of a punch-line, musing over the series of unfortunate events that led to the poor cat’s pirate-like predicament. She got the picture of the poor kitty walking around with an eyepatch and peg leg, toss in a feathery hat and she had the giggles. She tried not to laugh too much, after all the cat only had one eye! She’d be some type of monster to poke fun at a half-blind ickle kitty-cat!
But she couldn’t help bursting out with laughter as she imagined Captain BlackWhiskers with a full-on beard to match his eye-patch and peg-leg; it couldn’t be helped. She was still giggling when Persephone darted quickly to the side, and Zora vaulted straight over Kearie, the centaur-woman’s back after Persephone in alarm, worried that something was up. But she pulled back and laughed when the anthro girl stuffed a cricket in her pocket. “Nice catch! You got some good legs on ya, girl!” Zora said approvingly. They kept moving in relative silence, Zora’s ears ever aware, her eyes everywhere at once it seemed as they widened their search perimeter. Persephone finally caught onto something with those feely-smeller things of hers. “Great news, you lot. The goods are at the hospital.”
Zora did a sort of hop, skip and a leap type of dash ahead, twisting into the air with a crow of triumph. “Huzzah and all that!” she said when she landed, bouncing about the two in her excitement. “Let’s get a move on, then! I can’t wait to get my paws on the loot!” She grinned, whiskers twitching in anticipation. With that she took off toward the hospital at a lope, every now and again vaulting into the air, long hare-paws and strong, wiry legs propelling her into the air with ease.

Kearie had been listening to Seph, she had really, and even gave a soft chuckle at the punchline of the story - her head turning to the hare-anthro who had begun to have a fit of giggles as they walked; it wasn't that funny was it? She merely shook her head and turned forward once more, the large anthro not the best traveling companion for going out of the territory, as her size wasn't the best stealth wise. Though she tried not to worry too much, not wanting to worry her companions about her ease of over-thinking situations and finding herself a jumble of nerves.
Her ears perked forward then as Seph darted and Zora bounded over her back end .. what in the ..? When Zora made it evident of what Seph had been doing, Kearie found herself smiling once more. The small slug-anthro girl that had been quickly becoming a constant companion in her stay here was constantly moving, talking, and in general sometimes causing herself to fret when she got herself into trouble more often than she should. She then stopped moving as Seph leaned against her, her brows rising as she announced where the supplies were and jumped a little, her muscles twitching, as the hare girl bounded forward and jumped in a victorious leap. She was perplexed .. didn't she know what was known to be at the hospital?
She leaned down, closer to Seph as she placed a hand over her mouth to cup it towards her friend, "does she realize that Virus' are supposed to be in that compound?" she said with a small frown at both the fact that they might have to deal with large infectious beasts and the fact that their party member was enthusiastic about meeting them. Well -- maybe she didn't know. "Want a ride to keep up with her?" she said as she offered a hand to her friend to help pull her up if need be - she had a feeling the other was going to keep them racing to keep up.
At this point, Persephone had accepted the fact that people often missed her meaning if she wasn’t entirely straightforward. But this…blimey.
Either Seph was severely lacking in skills at sarcasm, or Zora was completely oblivious to it. Or just too brave to care about illnesses in the form of huge, vicious creatures designed to kill her. Or too stupid…dash it all, Seph didn’t know what was wrong with the frenetic warrior, except that she had taken this new development as nothing to worry about. Something to celebrate, even.
Kearie soon voiced the same concerns, to which Seph could only click her tongue in bewilderment. "Might be a bit barmy, that one." There was a moment’s hesitation, in which seemingly the hare anthros antics had frozen them in place. Kearie was the first one to take action, offering to tote Seph after their fleeting comrade.
For a moment the blotchy girl leaned away in an offended stance, which she trusted her friend to recognize as only in jest. "No worries, mate, I like a good run." With that, the slender anthro sprang away, expecting a set of hooves to breeze past her at any moment.
It was still a weird experience. For most of her life, Persephone had been used to being faster than the average person, enough that her unwillingness to join track teams had irritated certain people to no end. Granted, she was still comparatively swiftfooted here; on top of her innate ability, she now possessed the animalistic speed that was practically universal to her kind.
But then there were melds like Zora or Kearie. Prey animals meant to be gone in the blink of an eye. Against a rabbit and horse Seph would no doubt be trailing behind, but she should be able to keep them in sight as long as they didn’t tear off full speed. She hadn’t been just teasing her centaur friend; she really did enjoy running. It was one of the few challenging things in the world that didn’t make her give up early. Besides, it was a nice way to keep her mind off where they were going. If she were a braver person, Seph might have used the trip to psych herself up, prepare mentally for possible danger. Certainly it would be a better use of the time, but she wasn’t willing to accept that. For now, it was easier to pretend like nothing bad might be waiting for them.
Amped up as she was, Seph was starting to worry Zora really would leave them behind. “Oi, Zora!” she called. “Slow up a bit, mate! We haven’t all got lightning legs.” She started to wonder if Kearie had been on to something, as far as if the warrior was in the know. Surely she was? “You do know what we might be dealing with, right?”
o.o.c. – I thought I would let one of you guys introduce the next bit of fun we plan to toss at them. If we wanna toss that in this round, that is. ^^
Zora was well on her way to the hospital, seeming to fly over the ground in great leaps with each powerful kick of her muscled legs. She heard the thunder of hooves behind her, assuring the two were following. But the sounds of her fellow tribe-mates got steadily farther behind and she realized she was leaving them behind. She was still adapting to the fact that not everyone was as quick as she was--hell, she was still getting used to having legs as long as these. Zora slowed her pace and waited for the two to catch up, which didn't take long seeing as both were pretty swift-footed themselves. “Sorry 'bout that. Didn't mean to leave you two in the dust,” she said with a wry grin.
At Persephone's question, Zora nodded several times, long ears bouncing. "Viruses." She replied, the grin on her face broadening as if she was accepting a challenge. Zora twirled her staff in her deft hands, slamming the metal-capped end to the cement with a surprisingly loud thud, her message clear. She'd take down any Virus that would dare to show its face. “They're more 'n just a thorn in the ass, or however that saying goes, but I can handle 'em.” She snorted in derision at the thought of those disgusting things trying to come after her friends. They were monstrous things, to be sure, but they didn’t scare her. She knew better than to take them lightly, but she’d faced them before and come out on top more than once; that wasn’t just luck. That was skill. Damn straight, she thought to herself with a self-satisfied smirk.
But something caught Zora’s attention—a low rumble in the distance that was steadily growing louder. Her long ears swiveled and her whiskers twitched frantically. She could feel a change in the air about them, and the rumbling became steadily louder until it started to hurt her sensitive ears. “Guys, somethin’ bad is headed our way. Somethin’ big.” She said, motioning to the darkening sky on the horizon. “We best find some cover, lickity-split.”
No sooner had she spoke than everything went white and a thunderous roar shook the world around Zora and her friends. The temperature dropped in a matter of seconds and Zora’s teeth were chattering as she tried to see Persephone and Kearie—hell, she tried to see anything! There was so much snow. Wait, snow?! It took her a few seconds to realize what was even happening. “It’s a blizzard!” she shouted hoarsely, but it had about the effect of pissing in the wind. She'd be lucky if the other two could hear her. “A goddamned blizzard!”
Kearie laughed as Seph pointed out that their friend might be a little touched in the head. No matter, it was more the point that the rabbit-girl was racing head-long into trouble and leaving them behind! If anything she'd like to be there for the girl if she got herself into some trouble. Kearie didn't have any weapons so help, but she did have a horses ass and some heavy-hooved feet that could break some toes.
She wasn't offended as the girl took off, just smiled and shook her head before following in pursuit of the two girls. Overtaking Seph a little after she adjusted her speed to not out-run her as they came up upon Zora. "Yeah, and viruses ain't no big thang hun," she said as she frowned a little, although she couldn't help the curve of a smile hint at her mouth. The confidence the small woman exuded was marvelous, and something she hadn't had til only recently -- even if she erred on the side of caution anyways. She couldn't handle closed in situations since her bigger lower half made for easy surrounding attacks and just .. yeah. Sometimes this body was a blessing and sometimes it was a curse. Either way, she took the whole of it in stride ... or canter - either way.
She looked over to where Zora motioned then, her hand resting above her brow to block out the sun before the clouds rolled to block it out, and the deep purple and blue-black clouds were very noticeable. Her eyes widened a bit as the crack of thunder boomed around them and a wind gust picked up, white covering her vision. She twisted and attempted to pull the hair out of her face, finally pulling it into a loose bun and out of her face before she heard Zora yell something about a blizzard? Her brain took a moment to register that before her eyes widened and she looked around for Seph. She had remembered what the slug girl had been telling her about when the winter would come, and this was all very sudden.
She grabbed at the girls arm then, her face wrinkled in worry as she spoke, "Seph I know ya don't like the idea of rides but you aren't walkin' in this, I won't let ya," she said as she grabbed the girls shoulders and hauled her up onto her back. "God, I'm sorry I don't have mah blanket with me," she said as she eyed the slug-girl.
It should have been comforting to have such a fearless fighter around. Certainly Zora sounded formidable, in speech and actions. Seph, however, had only ever learned to be optimistic about things that wouldn’t matter in the long run. She wasn’t inclined to see this as bravery as much as recklessness. The hare-girl’s carefree energy, otherwise a rather endearing trait, seemed to be carrying over into her perception of danger, and that was worrisome.
Maybe barmy really was the right word. A harsh judgment, but an easy one for a frightened mind to make. Shameful as it was, if viruses did attack, Seph would be very dependent on her companions, and until now she’d been banking mostly on the warrior. The best she’d ever done was escape fights, not win them.
At least Kearie was with them too. She didn’t know much about her friend’s combat skills, but then size made the centaur formidable even if she was a rubbish fighter. And the more level-headed element to her courage was comforting.
Her thoughts were interrupted when, oddly enough, Zora showed the capacity to sober up. Which may have just been a testament to how worried Seph should be about…whatever the problem was. Her focus stayed pinned on the jackalope, impatient for a verdict and trying to pretend is wasn’t going to be so bad.
Soon enough the warrior confirmed the contrary, and those ears weren’t the sort to argue with. Though it didn’t seem so bad, at first, when she followed Zora’s gaze and realized it was the weather. She wasn’t particularly surprised to have such a clear day turn bad. The weather-makers here were as bad as the worst pantheon you could think of, the way they treated their underlings like playthings.
But something was worrying her, and it wasn’t the swift swirling of the approaching canopy. Maybe she’d been too worried to notice earlier. Maybe she was just imagining it now. She got her answer only moments before the world went white, when the temperature dropped faster than she could adjust. And sure enough, when the cold was gone again, her energy was quickly fading after it.
The nudibranch girl huddled against the equine ribcage beside her. The wind was somewhat tolerable then, and what warmth came through kept her feet from dragging too much. Still it was hard to think of anything other than sleep, and it was muddling her mind. The only thoughts that could beat out the drowsiness were short, urgent survival advice. Don’t fall. Stay awake. Don’t lose the others.
By the time a hand wrapped around her wrist, she really didn’t know who to assume it belonged to. She remembered something about going somewhere where there were viruses. Maybe that’s what had her. Wait, that would be bad, wouldn’t it?
The small woman squirmed lethargically, trying to shrug off the firm hold on her. Instead she was lifted clear off her feet, which set off panic. Her brain was left in a fog as the rest of her came alive, thrashing and kicking weakly at whatever had her. “Kearie! Zora!” Her voice was frantic but weak, quite possibly drowned out in the roar of the wind. The small anthro swung her heels again, trying and failing to shout louder. “S-something’s got me!”
