PERSONALITY TRAITS:
Hestia is what might come to mind when one thinks of a proper young lady. She always maintains a composed, aristocratic air. Nothing flusters her, no emotions leak through. She’s gracious to everyone, always knows what to say, always full of subtle flattery.
She’s also the type that becomes everyone’s surrogate mother. She watches out for the weak and hurting. She’s full of advice, comfort, and encouragement. She’s not afraid to gently chide those who step out of line. She’s protective, and if she has to, she will fight. She seems rather put off by having to shed blood, but she’s not helpless. Some may find her cloying, but generally, the woman is seen as someone who has your best interests at heart.
The fact that people fall for these facades just goes to show that Hestia has plenty of experience in deception.
In truth, she’s usually annoyed or even disgusted but the people who need her coddling. Such weaknesses are repulsive, and if it wasn’t all part of the act, there would be no way in high heaven she’d tolerate them. She’s very much an arrogant woman, and few can hold a candle to the perfection she sees in herself. Contrary to how it would seem, she’s not one to forgive weaknesses. This isn’t entirely a secret, either; she has a tendency to patronize people, talk to them like she knows best. She’s also slippery with her words; she might say something in a way that sounds sincere, but undermines confidence and damages esteem. It makes the listener easier to manipulate, and Hestia just loves having control over people.
Actually caring for these people is unheard of. She keeps them around as long as it is still a benefit, whether because she wants to use them or to make herself look innocuous to others. As soon as her little charges become troublesome, she finds some way to get rid of them. In most cases she could betray or even kill these people in a heartbeat, if she thinks it necessary. Sentiments and attachments just don’t come readily to this distant woman.
She pretends otherwise because it sounds safer. Hestia has always had a raging paranoia. Everyone’s put to get her, and it is almost impossible that there could be people who honestly care about her, who aren’t just using her for their own means. In the outside world, she simply believed people would use her or try to tear her down emotionally. Now that she’s in a lawless place where people are killed every day, her mistrust has worsened considerably. Hessie is always watching, always ready. She never lets her guard down, never assumes that a given person is entirely safe. By pretending she’s a demure, motherly woman, potential enemies will be less prepared when she fights back.
There is the rare occasion where someone actually comes close to earning Hestia’s confidence. You might even say she has genuine friends, though one must wonder how much she actually cares about these people. She continues to keep them at arm’s length, and keeps things from them. Emotions and weaknesses are never allowed out. For one thing, she is too proud to admit flaws to anyone; she even has herself halfway convinced she’s perfect. For another, just because you have managed to prove yourself trustworthy, that doesn’t mean untrustworthy people can’t get information out of you. The only person it’s safe to keep Hestia’s secrets with is Hestia.
In her determination and fierceness, Hestia becomes very protective of this handful of friends. But it’s uncertain how much she honesty cares about their well-being. It’s quite possible she only defends these people because they are important to her own happiness. If worst comes to worst, she usually will abandon these people to save her own skin.
She’s an ambitious woman who does what she has to. That’s how Hestia validates her more questionable actions; she has few qualms about anything from lying to murder because she firmly believes that the end justifies the means. So she won’t take drastic action unless she can rationalize why it’s necessary. Problem is, she usually can. And if said actions take a violent turn, the recipient will find that Hestia isn’t really bothered by bloodshed at all. In fact, she has a troubling enthusiasm for it.
Naturally these tendencies are among the things she most wants to keep hidden. As mentioned before, however, she doesn’t make herself look completely helpless, either. That would be just as stupid as revealing how lethal she can be. Hessie simply pretends to be slightly disturbed by carnage, too empathetic to enjoy taking a life. She will hunt, supposedly because she accepts the necessary evil in order to keep people alive. She will fight, but unless she’s alone with her opponent she holds back, only revealing as much skill as she needs.
Hestia is also rather fond of attacking people emotionally. She’s seen as someone you can confide in, and talk things over. So she usually knows exactly what their weak points are, their insecurities and fears. Given that she likes to manipulate people, this is very useful to her. And if she feels liking tearing into a particular person, she can often do so without ever sounding like she’s outright trying to put them down. After all, Hessie has quite a way with words.
She tries to avoid becoming an overt leader. Leaders get killed. She’d much rather get acquainted with those in charge and try to find a way to manipulate them. And if that doesn’t work, she finds ways around their rules. She has no qualms about taking loopholes, and will often word her promises in such a way that that option stays open.
As much as she seems to take everything with grace, Hestia is easily offended and easily angered. Once someone invokes these emotions, she never forgets it and rarely forgives. And she will strike back, but never in an obvious way. Rarely will she attack someone outright, with other people watching. Sometimes she simply waits for the right opportunity, sometimes she designs something that can’t be traced back to her. It doesn’t matter if the victim actually knows who sabotaged them, just as long as Hestia gets her revenge.
KNOWN HISTORY:
Hestia Murray was never lonely, growing up. Her socialite family meant that her life was always full of people and get-togethers. For a young age she was taught to be a perfect young lady, able to navigate any social situation. This skill came as the result of many strict lessons on etiquette, but she wasn’t horribly bothered. It was only a very minor downside to her family’s enviable life. They were not famous, but were quite influential in the community, and also wealthy. Hessie and her sister had everything they ever wanted.
One would think she had the perfect life, but somehow she managed to make herself unhappy.
As she got older, Hestia didn’t keep many of her friends. It wasn’t that she became antisocial, or had arguments with them. Most of these people didn’t even realize that Hess was growing distant. She still associated with them, but as for maintaining any real relationship, she rarely bothered. She found she didn’t like sharing her more personal thoughts with people. She started feeling like they might be out to get her. Nothing too drastic, just to destroy her emotionally or something along those lines.
There were only a select few who she genuinely enjoyed the company of. They were actually strange persons to have gained her semi-trust. Oddly enough, these people rarely fit what would seem safe to her. For example, one girl she’d known since kindergarten grew increasingly violent and out of control, yet she was one of Hestia’s closest friends.
It didn’t help Hessie’s problem when the existence of shifters got out, and suddenly her kind was being hunted down. Before this, her family had thought it best to keep their ability secret, so there was no immediate need to worry.
And for a few years, that continued to be the case. Maybe there was simply no solid evidence that would lead to her family being investigated; they never told anyone about their abilities and were extremely careful about where they used them. Maybe they were reluctant to accuse an influential family, lest they make a mistake. No one came, though Hestia never felt assured that they wouldn’t come.
Still, she wasn’t prepared when they did come. One moment everything was peaceful, and the next the house was surrounded. The family was rounded up after some short but violent scuffles. The UNIT tema hadn’t had the best timing; mother Christine was not at home, and now would be much more difficult to track down. But the father was executed, and the two sisters were spirited away to the labs.
For the first time, Hestia was truly under the control of others. And these others felt no awe or jealousy towards her, or even respect. Hestia had no bargaining power; she had nothing that the Keepers couldn’t take from her if they wanted it. They poked, prodded, and studied; they tore into her mind, they manipulated her. If she tried to maintain her dignity, they laughed at the pompous young woman who could just barely hold herself together. When she snapped, they delighted in watching how they’d wrecked her. There was no way to win their games.
When they released her into their biodome, she adapted easily to the harsh environment, as if she had never been a pampered rich girl. But she also kept to her secretive old ways; when she joined up with the Carna, no one suspected they were taking on another violent, unstable woman.
