BARK BARK BARK!
A group of doves burst into the sky from their hiding places amongst the tall dead grasses of the plains. Their rapid wing beats and sounds of surprised distress effectively broke the silence of the crisp, morning autumn air. The avian creatures frantically split off from each other, each one diving into a different direction for a new hiding spot, though careful to avoid the creature that had disturbed them.
BARK BARK!
Another group of doves took to the skies.
The day had started off like any other. The sky was a cloudy grey, basking the world of the Menagerie in a saturated hue. The cool air had a mild damp scent to it after having had days of constant, bitterly cold fall showers. Even the earth was a bit sodden—though not completely soaked—having yet to be given any real sunlight to dry it out. Despite the past few days of rain though, there seemed to be some hope that the clouds would give way to the brilliant blue sky that was hidden behind them.
BARK BARK BARK!
Yet again, more birds came out from hiding.
Leon came tumbling out of the fierce overgrowth of plains grass. His tongue lolled out of his short snout as his little heart pounded wildly in his chest. His breath came out in steaming white puffs as it met the cool autumn air. The blue heeler’s tail wagged excessively as he stared up at the sky, watching as the birds flew off in wild directions in an effort to evade him like the gruesome predator he was pretending to be. He hadn’t had this much fun in almost a week. Oh, how Kara had kept him cooped up in that odd-smelling shack for those long, horrible rainy days.
Not today though! Hohohoh, not today! The sneaky little bastard had snuck out while the tigress-woman was out on yet another hunt for food. It had been a few days since they had managed anything, but that didn’t stop the troublesome boy from seeking some well-needed adventure time. He had opted to leave Randy back in the shack to “watch the house” for them while the two shifters were out for the day. Besides, if Kara—for some unfortunate reason—came back before he did, Randy could keep her company. Maybe she’d be less likely to freak out on him that way. The puppy shuddered at the thought of the angry tiger shifter.
He shook his head and continued his harassment of the wildlife, leaping forward in another prance and dash about the long grasses. ‘Not going to think about Kara. We’re going to have fun for a little while…then we can worry about her,’ he mentally coached himself. He threw his head up to the sky and opened his maw once more.
BARK BARK BARK!
He pressed onward, spurring up trouble all the while.
Sorry it's short...and possibly kind of sucks Dx

The badgers ears twitched in her sleep as the sound of a canine broke through the haze that was sleep. Her blue eyes peeled open as her pupils constricted, her nostrils flaring as she shook her body, dust falling off. Pulling herself up she stretched out as the barking came again and birds came flying out of the brush off to her right.
She turned her head idly as she growled low in her throat, her nose twitching at the scent of the dome-goer who had stumbled upon her plot of ever-moving land. No one had messed with her in quite some time and truthfully that's how she liked it - quiet. The barking was not helping her wish of having a calm afternoon either. It was a male, that was for certain, but he had no particular scent to give away his group name .. thus he was like her. It didn't make her any less aggrivated though as she flexed her muscles as she prowled forward, the honey badgers gait loping and slow as she turned her head this way and that, trying to figure out where the thing was at now.
A rustling of grass getting closer was her cue and as the BARK BARK BARK! came once more she reached out a paw and swiped as the thing came closer, watching as it tumbled to a stop. She eyed the thing, slowly moving forward as she talked.
"Well well well .. what do we 'ave here. Someone who decided to wake me up, disturb my restful day ... and ..." she sniffed as she got close to him, her narrowed eyes widening slightly as the corner of her eye twitched as her lips pulled back a bit in annoyance to show her canines. ".. a pup?!" she scoffed. Who would leave their young one to roam by themselves? How irrisponsible. "What're you doing out here by yourself, boy?" she asked of him as she stared him down, the tuft of fur at the base of her neck that had stood straight relaxing and going flat on her shoulders.

BARK! BARK BARK!
Another burst of wildlife scattered in his wake. ‘That’s right, run! Flee while you still can! I’m big, and I’m bad, and I’m…’ he briefly paused in his path of mayhem, trying to find the right words. His eyes lit up and he pounced forward. ‘I’m a terrible dog monster!’
BARK BARK BARK!
‘Abandoned at birth because of how ferocious I was!’ He leapt into the air, his little jaws snapping at the fleeing birds. ‘I was raised by fearsome tigers because they were the only ones who could handle me!’ He let out another series of barks. ‘I’m mean, and powerful, and fearl—!’
“Woah!” he yelped in surprise. He came to an abrupt halt as he suddenly came face to face with a black and white creature. It swiped at him with long hooked claws, causing the pup to peddle backwards in an effort to escape them. Leon tripped over his own paws in his haste to escape the claws, but was quick to find his footing again. What the hell was this thing? It wasn’t…huge, but compared to his dog form, it was a good size for whatever it was. His hazel eyes looked the creature over as it slowly moved towards him. Was it some sort of mutated wild dog? A cat maybe? ‘No, no, it has to be some sort of sloth. Sloths have big claws like that!’ he thought rapidly. As the creature continued its threatening approach, he reconsidered, ‘…but so do bears...’ He tentatively backing up as it drew closer. And then it spoke! Leon’s subtle retreat stopped in its tracks as his ears flew forward. Holy crap on a cracker! It just spoke! His little mind was so wrapped around the idea that the strange animal had spoken that he almost missed the fact that this thing was addressing him, and it appeared none too happy to have been apparently woken up. His ears flattened against his cranium as reality finally came back to him. Ooooooh he was in trouble. He was about ready to bolt—the fact this thing could speak be damned—when the two-toned animal’s words came to a sudden stop as it sniffed his blue-ticked fur. ‘Kara’s going to kill me if this thing doesn’t do it first,’ he thought as he shuffled away from the advancing animal.
Once narrowed green eyes widened—albeit slightly—as if realizing something. The creature’s lips curled back, revealing its sharp canines before letting out sharp words of disbelief. Without a moment to spare, the mysterious animal spoke up once more, interrogating him. And, as if suddenly remembering himself, the pup stood up tall and puffed out his little chest, tail standing tall behind him. Defiant little bugger. “I’m playing,” he told the thing truthfully before firing the question back at it, “What are you doing out here?” He fixed the larger animal with the best glare he could muster to make up for his smaller size.

She had wondered if the thing had any balance at all before she found out it was a pip-squeak; her thoughts lessening a little in severity but still annoyed by the fact he was by himself with no one watching him. She let her back legs lower until her rump settled into the dirt with a poof of dust, her bright blue orbs watching his every move. Hell, for all she knew he was in on some scam to ambush her. She watched as he coward and then switched his mind when she asked of his business, watching him puff out like an aggressive bird or reptile, chest puffed out to show dominince or otherwise. This thought amused her as she broke out in a grin before he spoke.
"...What are you doing out here?"
She paused, eyes calculating as she watched him, and if she had her humans skin on the furred lines above her eyes would've rose in surprise at his sudden confidence. She grinned, her purely whites flashing in a somewhat dangerous smile at the pup as she tilted her head at him. "Why .. I was sleeping and taking care of my land, boy. Land which you are trespassing on right now..," she said as she straightened, her back haunches coming up off the ground as she shook her body, the dust floating up and into the air once more.
"Where is your parents? Your caretakers?" she asked as she looked at him, walking around to circle behind him, sizing him up. She reminded him of the dogs where she used to live, though not the same kind, obviously. Definitely not hyena either, which she would've gladly ignored the pup and walked off to leave it by itself -- she never really cared for the annoying laughing creatures. "You're obviously too small to take care of yourself properly ... you probably can't even hunt without scaring the prey off," she said with a grin; her eyes glinting.

The pup watched the strange creature with quiet regard as it sat down. She seemed unaffected by his show of bravado, merely, she grinned at him with those sharp teeth. He felt a tingle go down his spine. It wasn’t a sort of friendly smile that one might have…hoped for. There was this creepy, threatening edge to it, despite what may have been intended. Maybe it was the teeth that made this creature’s smile seem off. Or, maybe it was just the animal in general that was intimidating. Leom wouldn’t have put it out of the question...
She spoke to him once more, reminding him a second time of the wrongs he had done. Her land? Her land? Well, this was great. He was really in for it now. Kara had always been extra cautious when the two of them had crossed into owned territory before. She had always told him to be careful, vigilant. She had warned him what might happen if they were ever caught. Here he had gone though, waltzing off without his guardian to watch over his back. Randy wasn’t even with him. And, now, all alone, he had met his first run in with a land owner. He needed to get back to Kara, fast. He’d bide his time until she’d hopefully come to rescue him…yet again.
The animal had risen to her feet, throwing off the dust from her pelt with a few good shakes. He threw down his front paws and barked at the strange beast, tail wagging about behind him. “I didn’t see a sign or anything with your name on it,” he argued back, trying to weasel his way out of some trouble. In his mind, it was a valid excuse. But, then again, he didn’t know much about how Kara was magically able to tell where boundary lines were.
Another round of questions was shot his way, all while she circled around him, like a predator sizing up its prey. Leon rose from his playful stance, tail tucked under him as he tried to follow her constantly moving form. His hazel eyes did not dare to leave the creature. “She’s…she’s just a little ways behind me,” he lied, though not very well. He had originally meant to tell this creature the truth, but, what would it do if it knew he was all alone? That Kara was really unaware that he had run off, and, thus, wouldn’t come readily bounding to his aide. “So—so if you hurt me, you’ll be real sorry,” he threatened. Maybe that might ward the strange animal off.
She continued on with her intimidating show, once more grinning at him with that creepy smile as she spoke again. His tail flew out from beneath him as he let out a round of angry barks at her. “I take care of myself just fine!” he informed her boldly, “And, Kara said she’d teach me how to hunt when I got older.” Her comment had brought about the braver side of the child once more. His hazel eyes fixed the creature with a confident glare.

The little thing was adorable in his own way, she decided, even if it did irk her that it seemed to not understand the dangers it would face by itself. She could've easily grabbed the little one by it's neck and it would be over before he knew it - lucky for him she had a soft spot in her cold heart for children. At least she assumed he was a child by his antics and speech - she could, in fact, be very wrong. She shook her head at the thought in mild annoyance as she looked back to the four-legged canine as he barked ..
Where were they .. ? Ah yess ..
"Sign? What is this you speak of? Some man-made thing..?" she said with a gentle laugh this time, more amusement than mocking of the small creature as she slowed her stroll. "Is my scent not on this land you stand in?" she said as she moved about -- even though she was a rogue she had spent the past few weeks in Bellator lands, and thus had adapted a decent amount of their scent into her pelt. Thus, her story she spun held some weight to it even though she knew, if by chance he had been any older than she thought, he would catch on. It was always fun to mess with the little ones ...
She paused in front of him once more, her sharp eyes glinting as she sauntered forward as he stammered out something about hurting him. She paused, her head tilting as her mouth pulled to the side in amusement before the creature shifted into a dark-skinned woman with powder white hair, a human laugh escaping her lips as she went from a crouch to falling back on her rump. All while having almost not caught the sentence about hunting he had responded to her about.
She peered down at him now, the pup a lot smaller than she in this odd, non-furred form. The growls and guttural sounds of Shifterspeak sounded almost the same in this form though, even with the hint of higher vocals she carried. "To hunt, you must first understand you prey .. how it thinks and how it reacts. To this, you must sometimes experience what it is to be hunted," she said with a low drawl, her back legs folding underneath her as she glanced to her hands, flexing this long paws with blunt, soft claws. "Many do not do this, but it is something I've found that helps you in zee long run," she said with a grin, although a bit less feral without the pointed ends. "Do not worry, I won't test you in this becoming prey, I suppose I have ruffled you enough," she said as she ran one hand through the dry grass off to her side as she spoke.

He gave the stranger an incredulous look at its question. Was this thing serious? What did it mean by “what is this you speak of?” “Man-made thing,” ha! How did it not—his wonderings came to a halt when his brain recognized the creature’s verbiage. ‘Wait a minute…’ His eyes narrowed and his ears pricked forward as the animal continued, confirming his suspicions. It’s scent? Only… His tail stood up and became rigid as he accusingly barked, “You’re a wild animal!” It wasn’t so much as an aggressive accusation as it was simply the pup finally catching on as to what exactly stood in front of him.
A sort of awe filled him despite the warnings that blared in his young mind. He was actually talking to a wild animal! And the best part was, it was talking back! How cool was this? He had always loved animals, and here one was, a true animal—not a shifter like Kara or him—that was actually holding a conversation with him! ‘I can’t wait until I tell Kara about thi—sss…’
His thoughts raced from their original enthusiasm to those of dread. This was a wild animal. Kara would kill him! He’d always told him to be careful around wild animals…especially ones that could—or, would, rather—hurt him. And here he had standing around throwing empty threats at one… His ears folded against his cranium and his hazel gaze quickly focused on the ground as another thought suddenly hit him. ‘Wait…I thought we could only speak to other shif—!’ He caught a blur of movement out of the corner of his eye, and he quickly found the strange animal moving rapidly towards him, its green eyes examining him with a deadly glint. He stumbled backwards hurriedly, confused and alarmed by the animal’s sudden advancement.
A head tilt and a smirk later, the creature’s appearance had transformed into something more familiar to him. Leon blinked, stunned at the figure that had replaced the black and white bear-like animal before him. “You’re a...” White tresses of long hair flowed from the crown of its head, framing rich dark skin. “…you’re a…” What were once animalistic green eyes, the boy now found himself staring at ones that were remarkably human. The heeler puppy shook his head hard and back up a few paces, letting out alarmed puppy-barks all the while. “You’re a girl!”
That strange creature, it was a girl in disguise! It was no wonder he couldn’t understand it! Girls were always so confusing. He would know. He’d been living with one for the past few months since those strange doctors had dumped him in here… When Leon heard the woman laugh, his insistent barking stopped abruptly. His hazel eyes watched her with a new, wary glance as she sat back onto her backside. “Are you a…shifter?” he inquired suspiciously, gaze narrowed onto the woman before him. He’d thought that she was a wild animal. Weren’t only special people, humans, able transform into animals? Had he’d been wrong?
She looked down at him from her new height advantage and spoke to him once more. She gave him confusing advice on hunting, which caused the pup’s ears to flicker as he tried to make sense of her words—his mind was still half-focused on the fact that there was a confusing girl-possible-wild-animal-shifter before him. Be the hunted? How would that help? He wasn’t prey, not normally anyway. How could he know what a rabbit would think? Or a squirrel, or a bird, or a deer? “I don’t see how that would help…” he grumped under his breath.
She took a casual glance at her hands as she continued. Once more, he questioned her advice. How could it be helpful? His young, inexperienced mind was having trouble grasping a concept he knew nothing of. To him, hunting was what he did when he tried to sneak up on animals, or unfortunate traveling partners—Kara. That was the extent of what his child-like mind knew. Spot, stalk, pounce, hold on, make it surrender. Leon tilted his head to one side as he gave her a cock-eyed glance while he attempted to make sense of the matter being somewhat taught to him.
With her closing comment on the matter, Leon’s cranium corrected itself as he threw his paws down in an almost playful stance once more. “I’m not scared of you!” he barked defensively, some prideful part of him offended that she wouldn’t “test” him in this game of hers.
