Noises were constantly echoing through the caves. She assumed they were from the waterfall, and the various guards that came and went. From time to time she heard a snippet of their conversations. Some of them thought it was pointless to guard her, and that they should let her go. After all, she appeared to just be a child. Others defended Gaunt, said she had to be here for a reason. Either way, they did their job. She had no idea how long she had been here, but knew it was long enough for snow to be falling. The guards spoke of it sometimes. She had not seen Gaunt since she was dumped here, nor had she seen him.
At first she pretended to understand. Surely Gaunt would be watching, keeping a suspicious eye on him at all times. Then she thought maybe he didn't even know where she was. Maybe not all of the Nilda members were aware of the cave system behind the waterfall? But he was smarter than that. He'd be able to figure it out, even if he hadn't known before. Finally she gave-up. Abigail estimated two-to-three weeks had passed by since she was taken captive. If he intended on seeing her, he would have came already. Perhaps, during her visit to him at the lake, he had been playing her the entire time. Maybe it had been an act on his part. That snarl at his packmate? Perhaps it had a second meaning. Go get Gaunt.
The worst part about this place was not the lack of him, though. It wasn't the cold. It wasn't even the noises. The worst part was the complete, and utter boredom. Abigail was used to wandering. She was constantly exploring new places, both in and out of Fallen territory. Now, though, she was trapped in a system of caves she couldn't even begin to figure out with a couple of mutts watching her every move. At least her hands were no longer bound. She rolled her eyes. She had stopped trying to speak to the guards shortly after arriving here. For one, she couldn't even see them. They were out through the short tunnel that connected this one, small chamber to the rest of the system. Secondly, any attempt she had made resulted in either silence, or threats from them. At least the threats had been somewhat entertaining. Once, Abigail thought she had heard him. She was probably just going crazy.
She sighed, and began to pick at her nails. It was a new habit she had developed since she had come here. Her instinct told her she needed to leave, but she was forced to ignore it. There was always at least one guard, no matter the time. She had found that one out the hard way. The third night, her bonds had been removed. Of course, as soon as she thought the coast was clear the redhead had shifted, and tried to slither away. Almost immediately, a paw slammed down right behind her head which, she had discovered, just happened to be her weak spot. She was unable to do anything. She had her hands tied for a few days longer after that.
More sounds were echoing around now. Nails clicking around on the stone, indicating what was probably a shift of guards or something. Overcome with the need to do something, Abigail stood up from where she was sitting and began to pace around the cavern. This was his fault.

Maggot wanted to pace. That was all he seemed to do lately. Ever since he heard the rumors going around the pack, he seemed unsettled. Nervous. Maybe even scared. He had heard that she had tried escaping, and in the end, was put down for good. The retro knew this wasn't true, but because his own pack mates could make such assumptions, it just drove him insane. Now it was dark out, and Maggot was sitting around a small bonfire with a few females. One was a dingo, the other was an Irish setter. They giggled and whispered to one another in their human forms, sitting upon a low boulder. They were pretty girls, and were obviously trying to get his attention, but all the boy could do was stare into the orange and red flames. After another half hour of sitting there, he became frustrated.
"Why the face?" The dingo girl asked. Her name was Jen. She eyed him hungrily with a flirtatious smile, making the other female giggle. At first, the male ignored her. But once he looked up to meet her gaze, he was instantly filled with a strange sort of sadness. She had the same light brown eyes that reminded him of her. He sort of stared for a moment, but inside, he was falling apart. Maggot stood abruptly, and once he'd left the view of the others, he ran. He ran and ran until he collapsed onto the pebbles by the lake, exhausted. Even if he'd run in his dog form, his lungs were still the same, his smoker's lungs. He wasn't really a smoker, but a cigarette every once in a while really did an impact on his health. For a good twenty minutes, the dog just lay there. His panting already slowed but his thoughts did not. They flew around his head, emotions welling up inside. He wanted to see her again. But there were always guards that constantly kept an eye on her. He had tried to walk in one time, but when the bull mastiff came into view, he turned himself right around. It was no use. Unless he had luck on his side and he could trick the current night guard.
Maggot sauntered over to the waterfall. "You the only one here, pup?" He asked the small wolf who was apparently tonight's watcher, speaking lowly. His voice came out raspy and tired-sounding. Probably since he wasn't sleeping well either. The kid was young, and ducked his head to the high predator. "Y-yes sir." the cream-colored wolf stuttered. He obviously knew who this border collie was. "I'll take over. Go get some rest." Maggot murmured with a smirk. With an innocent smile and a grateful nod, the younger canine padded away, seeming satisfied. The pup was fairly new to the Nilda. The caves were quiet, dark, and eerie. Maggot's nails clicked against the stone as he made his way deeper into the darkness. He lowered his muzzle, taking a whiff. Yep, that was her scent. He started off with a trot, and then began to run. He couldn't help his excitement. He couldn't believe he got in so easily. His hopes were high right now.
He came to a halt outside the entrance to the first holding cell. He could smell her in there. Shifting into the floppy-haired teenage boy, he squinted. His human eyes were no better than his dog eyes. But she was there, he could sense it. Excitement, sorrow, denial, happiness, it all welled up inside him. "Abigail?" he whispered, eyes desperately searching for her to come into view.

Why would they though? It's not like they were trespassing. It was probably even better that they make it clear that they were present. What if she tried to escape again?
"Abigail?"
|
The voice made her heart skip a beat. For a moment Abigail could not move, frozen mid-step. Then her brown eyes furrowed in confusion. Her thoughts were jumbled over each other as if they were trying to compete with one another, and then they finally began to flow frantically. What's he doing here? Why did it take him so long? Am I being released? Does Gaunt know he's here? Does he still care?Cautiously, as if she was testing whether or not it was her own imagination, Abigail crept to the entrance. For a moment, just ever so slightly out of view, the girl hesitated. Her emotions welled up, causing a near-physical wall preventing her from moving forward. What if he was angry? Or disappointed? What if he was here to confess he was playing her? To mock her? Abigail crossed her arms protectively over herself, and frowned. Well, he knew she was here. She would have to face him sooner or later. After taking a deep breath, and clearing her face of any emotion, Abigail stepped forwards. She saw him there, hair as untidy as before. Her eyes scanned his face for emotion. She read something there, but wasn't sure exactly what it was. She wanted to say something, but couldn't find the words. She was upset with him, but happy to see him. She wanted to turn away from him, but, if nothing else, the boredom she felt would not allow her. Finally she settled on her default reaction: anger. She narrowed her eyes just slightly before she spoke. "I thought you forgot about me." Her voice was cold, yes, but there was also something more. Underneath the anger, there were small patches of desperation. Of her misery. She kept her arms crossed over her, as if they were the sole reason she wasn't completely falling apart. He had left her here alone in a strange place for so long. She had thought he would have come earlier, but the dog had obviously had more important things to do. When she spoke again, Abigail's voice shook slightly. "Why have you come?" The question sounded sharp, and it hung between them in the cold air. And why not sooner? Word count: 425. Maggot didn't think he could control himself when she came into view. All he wanted to do was shift into his fluffy body and tackle her. His eyes lit up and he breathed a sigh of relief that she was alright. He looked over her, just happy they had been feeding her and not keeping the shifter chained up.
"I thought you forgot about me."
The teen couldn't help but frown, and become more hurt, if anything. His eyes softened and he looked straight at her, feeling like complete crap. Why would she think that? Didn't she know he'd been kept out all this time, and finally got the chance to see her? "Abigail." he said, his frown still there. "I haven't been able to sneak in. I thought you knew that already." his voice was shaking a bit. Had she really been sitting here for weeks thinking she was all alone? Abandoned? "You gotta believe me." he added in a lower voice, feeling terrible now. It was all his fault. He did this. She must've felt so scared, like he left her there to rot. But no words could express how sorry he felt. His facial expression was awful, looking like a kicked puppy. He felt like one, too.
He looked down at his scuffed up shoes, hands at his sides and head lowered. "And I came because I wanted to see you." he whispered below his breath with squinted eyes, not realizing he had said the words aloud. At the time, Maggot saw himself as some monster. After finally making his first friend, he just had to screw it up. "I'm so sorry." he finished, putting his hand on the back of his neck and biting his lip. He reminded himself to keep his gaze lowered.

Disgust. However, after a moment longer of listening to the Retro, she realized the disgust was directed at herself.
Sure, he was the reason why she was captured. The reason she had even bothered venturing to the Nilda territory at all. But it wasn't his fault. She had made the decision to seek him out. It was her idea to get herself captured to keep his place in the Nilda safe. And now she was taking her boredom and anger with herself out on him? The single true friend she had in this place? Or, rather, the only friend she had at all? It was cruel even for her. What else had she expected? To be treated to some five-star accommodations for trespassing? No. She knew the days after her capture were not to be comfortable, but she had been willing to sacrifice a bit of her time to maintain Maggot's entire life with the Nilda. And, despite the mistreatment she had just given her friend, Abigail did not regret it.
Now, however, another problem entered her mind. Despite her sacrifice, Maggot was once again risking his position in his pack for her. If he hadn't come to see her before now, that spoke for itself that it wasn't allowed. Or at least was highly frowned upon. Why was it suddenly okay now? What if Gaunt found out?
"I'm so sorry."
The tone of his voice made Abigail feel suddenly nauseous with guilt. He sounded so... broken. Defeated. Because of her.
"Maggot..." she whispered, her sorrow ringing through her words, "I didn't mean that. I just-- I don't know. Being cooped up in here hasn't exactly been easy on my mind. I think things. And then I think them over again. It just gets further from the truth with every time I think them... Does that make sense?" Abigail searched his face for any sign of emotion. "Thank-you for coming... I wanted to see you too." Abigail gave a small smile, but was uncertain if he was even paying attention.
Her thoughts returned to the possibility of Maggot getting into some sort of trouble for seeing her, and she had to restrain herself from getting irritated with the dog again. Perhaps he had some sort of an explanation... or something. "Maggot. You said you had to sneak in... Doesn't that mean you could get in trouble?" Abigail paused, wondering how to word her next thought without upsetting him once again. "I don't want you to risk anything by visiting me. It was really nice but... I'm not worth that kind of trouble."
|
She frowned, and finally looked away from his face. She allowed her eyes to briefly flicker back to his every few seconds, but she did not wish to stare any longer. Abigail just hoped she hadn't offended him again. Word count: 490. Muse: High! Song: Mad World - Gary Jules Ooc: SORRY. This took like a month... The sound of his name spoken softly brought his eyes up from the ground. Abigail talked of how she thought things over too thoroughly, and Maggot found himself able to relate. After thinking things over again and again, they begin to stray far from the truth and become nothing but contorted little lies. He nodded once, expressing his understanding, it also showed in his eyes. Maggs would often sit in solitude for hours at a time and think about various things. Maybe the beauty of a flower. But after the hour had passed, that flower would be a disgusting, vile little thing to the retromorph. It would be a sweet little nothing. He would become sick of staring at its petals, and more than anything, he would feel so very alone. It was one of those feelings you just couldn't describe.
When Abi said she had wanted to see him too, the teen, surprisingly enough, could have sworn he had gotten butterflies for a split second. No one had ever said those words to him. the fact that someone actually wanted to see him brought some sort of hopeful spark in his heart. Hope that maybe he could try to be happy, in general. In response, he gave her a smile. The girl's question brought about next was easy to answer. After her last sentence, he began. "Oh, I took over tonight's shift." Maggot said with a small shrug. It wasn't lying, the boy was telling the truth. He just dismissed the young wolf keeping guard and took over the duty himself. After all, why wouldn't he be allowed to take on a shift? It seemed kind of silly that he would be forbidden to. "Hey, good news." His face lit up. "Gaunt and your pack have been sending messengers back and forth. I think you'll get to go home soon." He said with a smile now. No doubt the girl would be excited to escape this place, right? But then there was that lingering question in the back of his mind. Would the two ever see each other again after they parted? Did Abigail even care, or would she just be excited to leave the retro forever?

The way he phrased it sounded a little evasive, but she could care less. He was here now and he clearly did not hate her. Abigail's heart skipped a beat when he mentioned the possibility of her release soon. She figured she would have felt happy at the thought of returning to FallenRing and was surprised to feel a deep despair. Sure, she would be getting out of this cold, damp cave but it was finally time for her to explain her actions. Her capture would lower her reputation with the Ring. How could she ever hope to be leader if she went around getting herself captured?
Another thought then occurred to her, bringing an even deeper sense of dread with it. Would she ever see her friend again? Surely he wouldn't want her to risk getting captured again. Would she even be allowed to roam outside her Ring's territory anyways? Abigail shook that off. Nothing could keep her from roaming if she wanted to.
"Oh," she finally managed to say, struggling to force some happiness into her words, "That's really great."
|
She forced a smile. Clearly Maggot thought it was good news. Why wouldn't he? Who would assume part of her would want to stay? "Guess we'll have to set up some sort of meeting place, hey?" Abigail laughed weakly, as if it were almost a joke, but hoped that he would take it seriously. "I mean.
