dark blue, dark blue
have you ever been alone in a crowded room?
have you ever been alone in a crowded room?
The voice in the back of her head was oddly silent. It was a strange sensation, because even when Pariah was being relatively quiet or relaxed, that little voice was feeding her a constant stream of thoughts – doubts or observations or sometimes just small talk she made with herself. But no, even as she searched for it, the voice was being quiet. It was nice, she decided, even if it did feel a little foreign to have complete silence in her head. It must have something to do with what she was about to do, the bird finally decided. She rocked her weight forward onto the balls of her feet, and then back onto her heels. Even without the sharp eyesight she had grown accustomed to through life as a bird, she could see the bones at the bottom, shining and winking in the starlight, taunting her, begging her to come join them. She would jump, yes, but not to join them. A reflex exercise, Pariah told herself. It was just a reflex exercise.
She took a deep breath, glancing one last time at the bottom of the gorge, an uneasy feeling growing in her gut. She wouldn’t turn back now, though. She had a pride to uphold, didn’t she? She would never let herself forget the time there was a risk she did not take. Closing her eyes, letting the world become one seamless lump of black, Pariah leapt forward, diving rather than jumping into the gorge. She could feel the bones shifting under her skin, her body growing smaller, and feathers pushing their way through her skin. Her nose and mouth grew into a beak, and her arms became wings. Human to bird, in just the barest of seconds. Before she could even think to open her eyes Pariah pulled upwards, not wanting to meet the ground with her face. She had expected a rush of adrenaline, but the familiar thrill wasn’t there. It must have been the way her eyes were closed, she pondered listlessly. She would have to try it again, she decided, but not until after she had time to enjoy the beautiful, star-spangled night.
