PERSONALITY: Those who meet Diggory Haywood either instantly like him or instantly hate him; this is due mostly to Digg's tendency to stick his foot in his mouth, as he has absolutely no filter whatsoever. He says pretty much whatever he's thinking, either unaware of the effects this could have (or more than likely, he just don't give a good god d**n). Digg has a loud, booming voice (and laugh) and he sure knows how to project, and isn't afraid to do so. He's something of a party animal, though the type you want to take in small doses--or you just might find yourself waking up in a hotel bathtub missing a kidney. He's somewhat charming in his own uniquely befuddling way, and despite his skill at being about a decibel too loud he can turn on the smooth jazz voice when wooing the ladies and charm his way out of most of the trouble he gets himself into with a smile. He's a lot to take in one sitting, seemingly full of boundless energy, and when he's not sleeping, he's talking. And if he's not talking then he's probably been knocked unconscious, or is dead. Most people assume he's got some form of ADHD, but he's never been diagnosed. His Mama just called him "special" and let him run wild. Because of all this energy pent up, he's always moving somehow (twitching, pacing, etc) and is usually very hyper-aware of his surroundings, and is fairly sensitive to loud noises, flashing lights, etc. Digg is undoubtedly a little too friendly with strangers for a place like the Menagerie. Despite his outwardly friendly appearance, he doesn't trust wholeheartedly and won't turn his back to strangers, as years spent in the dome (and life before) have taught him that the moment you do, there could be a knife sticking out of it. He's been double crossed once or twice in his life time--even so, Digg isn't especially jaded and tends to give people the benefit of the doubt and tries not to "judge a book by it's cover". He gets himself into a lot of trouble with a lot of different folk, mostly unintentional. He doesn't often pay attention to detail so he ends up straying across enemy lines or stumbles into situations he's not always aware are happening. Most people who don't know Digg too well might see him as slightly untrustworthy, mostly due to his incredibly flawless track record at being utterly irresponsible. But those who know him well realize that this is in innocence, and though he's a flake, he's a kindhearted and well meaning one. SECTION IV - SUBJECT BACKGROUND
SUBJECT HISTORY: Born on the vast, sprawling acreage of his family's livestock ranch in Wyoming, Digg and his twin brother Elias (nicknamed Boone) grew up in a family full of warmth and love, and wanted for nothing. Their mother Nicola home-schooled them, a keen and intelligent woman who retired as a teacher to work on the ranch with her husband. Their father, Jaxson Haywood, was a keen businessman and a hard-worker, but a man who always managed to put family first. Digg spent most of his childhood days at his father's side, out helping herd some of the cattle, bison and horses they had on the ranch. When he wasn't at his father's side, he was playing under his feet or riding on his shoulders; and always battling it out with Boone for their father's attention. Jaxson Haywood knew better than to play favorites, but for a few good years Digg had his father almost all to himself (at least during the day) as Boone had gotten sick for a while and had to stay inside. Digg tried his best to keep up with his father, but he always had trouble keeping his focus, and would get easily distracted or startled by the loud noises the ranch provided. It wasn't long before the peaceful aura on the ranch stared to break--mostly cased by Digg. At a young age he began rebelling, as his brother Boone proved to be a better worker, and a more active part of ranch life. Digg would walk off into the woods for hours, ignoring his father's orders and causing general havoc. They were isolated on the ranch property, as Jaxson had strict rules about leaving. He didn't trust UNIT farther than he could throw a horse, as their family had been fighting for generations to keep UNIT off their lands. The battle with UNIT didn't start over Shapeshifters, which had also run for generations in the family (though it liked to skip a generation or so). The family kept to their ranch because they knew if they were discovered, UNIT wouldn't let them live for very long. Diggory never attended a UNIT school in his life, and had very few friends outside of the one or two neighbor kids (who lived a few miles away). He decided to break free and leave he confines of the ranch, and though part of his heart broke at leaving his family he knew there was more out there he wanted to explore. He was about 16 when he left, against his father's wishes. He spent the next ten years or so bouncing from town to town, city to city. He charmed his way into one job after the next, from trucker to sailor he made his way around the globe. Digg kept in constant contact with his family, calling them every week (every few days, if he was in a good spot and could manage it) and writing letters or emails when he could. He went back for a visit, but had a bit of a falling out with Boone, who had moved to (and back from) Spain over who should stay and take over Lone Pine, as their father was getting older. The argument almost came to blows, Boone accusing Diggory of being a lazy, irresponsible son of a pregnant dog who didn't care a lick for his family. Digg ended up driving off in a rage before he did something he'd regret, not knowing it'd be the last time he'd see his childhood home. He got arrested a few times, mostly for getting caught up in bar fights he was too drunk to remember. One of these bar fights led to his capture, when the hunt for Shifters first began. He was in some hole-in-the-wall back in the States when he and some other drunk got into an argument about a television show, about whether horses could actually tap-dance. Or talk. He can't really remember--but he ended up shifting to prove the point, that horses d**n well could tap-dance (he did a nice little number, as far as he can tell). He was reported by the bartender, and UNIT picked him up the next morning, passed out drunk on the bus bench outside the bar. All his tests went swimmingly, as he was surprisingly friendly and cooperative with the Keepers. He fought like hell at first, but when he figured out that there was no escaping he went along obligingly and did his best just to get through the rigorous tests. He didn't like it--in fact he hated his time spent in the labs. The only thing that he found positive about coming to the Menagerie is that it reunited him with his brother. It had been about five years since he'd seen or heard from him, but luckily enough the cells were organized by surnames, and the two brothers ended up side by side once again. Boone was distant and cold at first, and Digg gave him his space--as much as he could in the small cell. It wasn't long before Digg was released into the dome, and he waited around a few weeks in the general area where he'd been dropped, and sure enough he found Boone sprawled out in a field one morning. From that point on the two were pretty much inseparable, wandering the dome in an attempt to figure out what the hell to do, and how to life in the dome operated. The two were well prepared for surviving in harsh environments and knew how to survive in harsh environments, as well as the ins and outs of hunting and trapping due to their upbringing on the Lone Pine Ranch. They chose not to join any of the Rings, mostly because of Boone's naturally reclusive and almost paranoid nature; Digg simply followed where his brother led, content to do so after so many years on his own. They wandered alone for a good year or so until they met up with another duo of drifters by the names of Clementine Rourke and Bartol Winchester--or as Digg affectionately dubbed them: Hot Lips and Winny, and in return earned himself the nickname Big Hoss (another shifting inside a bar fiasco). Digg hit it off with them at the Speakeasy, dragged them to meet Boone in the morning and they've been traveling together ever since--for the remaining seven or so years until present day--excepting a considerable gap apart, of almost a year. Over time it became increasingly apparent to Digg that Boone was growing more and more at ease with using violence against whoever they came up against. During an especially tough winter, Boone would often "shoot on sight" and dragged Digg in situations in which he had been forced to kill. Clem and Winny didn't have a strong opinion either way, or if they did they didn't voice it in front of Boone. He was a strong, imposing man who wasn't easy to argue with. Digg did his best to deal with what came, but the breaking point came when the group accepted another couple of members, a woman and a younger child by the name of Sandra and Luther. Digg noticed that Boone quickly attached to them (as he had a wife and three children on the outside, he was a fiercely protective father figure), but he became quickly and equally as aggressive. He began to get increasingly determined to eliminate any and all threats, and became obsessed with security, becoming almost commandant-like in his authority (earning him the nickname Sarge) over the group. It got to be too much, and Digg finally challenged his brother on it; this time the argument did come to blows, and Winny and Clem had to pry the two apart. Boone essentially told Digg to get (and stay) the hell out if he didn't like the way they lived; so he did. Digg packed his things, said his goodbyes and left. It was only about a minute or so after he left that Clem and Winny came running after him. They sided with him on the matter, and left Boone, Sandra and Luther on their own. The trio spent about 8 months without Boone and the others, beginning to forge friendships here and there in the different Rings when they met up with the Ringers in No Man's. There were talks of joining up, but Digg actually came up with a clever idea (he has a lot of "brilliant" ideas, but seldom follows through with any) and suggested that they start a sort of Trading system. Since they were constantly roving, they picked up a lot of decent supplies--Digg figured why not visit the Rings and trade what they had for what they needed? It was slow going getting the idea into fruition, and it only kicked into high gear when Boone came and found them; he showed up out of the blue with Luther tagging behind him. He said that Sandra had died from an infected wound, and wouldn't say more than that. Diggory, Clementine and Winny instantly welcomed them back, and though no apologies were made, Boone's temporary insanity (as Digg liked to call it) seemed to have abated. For a while, at least. Boone threw his intellectual weight behind the Trade idea, and soon they got a good system up and running--they used their connections with the Rings to make friends and earn trust, slowly working their way first into the Fallen, then Fulsi and eventually Carna. Up to current day, Diggory, Boone, Clementine, Winny and Luther are still together and and eke out a living through trading and the occasional raid, though only in Retro territory.
