Isamu had sent word that Adelina had her baby - in the snow, no less! Bonifacio had excused himself from scouting duties that day (his raid wounds were acting up anyhow, not necessarily a total lie) and had snuck out of the Fulsi territory. As he flew over the city, his white and black speckled wings beating with a steady pace to keep him aloft, he couldn’t help but feel guilty that he had missed being there for Adelina. In her hour of need, where had he been? Getting drunk in his room and stewing in his own misery. For how long could this go on? How long could he stand to do this to her? The alcohol was no longer a blessed silence - it never really had been. Even though it would calm the chaos and quiet the flurry of thoughts, in the morning he would wake up and everything would clamber for attention and come back with a vengeance.
The burn scars along his wing had made flight impossible for a long time - but he’d practiced and eventually the feathers grew back. They were still sparse and it made flying a little more difficult, but he’d trained time and time again and could fly with a honed skill. It didn’t take him as long as usual to get to the Fallen, for he had been in a hurry. To come see his daughter and his new granddaughter, to visit with Isamu and be with his family. There was nothing more in this world that meant more to him than that, his family. As he approached the boxcar he shifted back and landed at the doorstep, knocking lightly before stepping in.
“Papa!” Adelina gasped, standing and carefully placing her child in its handwoven basket-cradle. Bonifacio watched at the care and heed she took, seldom having seen his daughter be so gentle. He walked towards her, peering down into the basket.
“You’re a grandfather, Papa.” Adelina said with a grin, her blue-green eyes sparkling.
He laughed, pulling her into a fierce hug, strong arms wrapping around his daughter, his only care in the world, never wanting to let her go. He clung to her and she clung to him, and for once they were on the same page - brought together by the tiny little child sleeping just beside them, unaware of all the joy it had brought this small family in this dismal, hellish place.
He finally let Adelina go, wiping a tear from her eye. He kissed her forehead before turning his attentions to the baby girl. “Qual è il suo nome?” he asked, grinning when her tiny hand wrapped around one of his fingers.
“Reagan.”
Bonifacio smiled, nodding. “She is beautiful,”
“She is, isn’t she?” said Adelina.
Bonifacio nodded as he picked up his grand-child and cradled her in his arms like he had done with Adelina so long ago it seemed. “Does she cry much? When you were a baby you cried all the time.” He looked up and saw Adelina’s eyes brimming with tears.
“She cries...all the time. I love her Papa, I really do - but I just can’t stand it!” Adelina took a shaky breath, looking about ready to pull her hair out from the roots. He noticed then how frazzled and worn out she looked.
Bonifacio laughed, cradling Reagan close and walking to Adelina’s side. “Shh, shh. It’s all part of parenthood. I’ll watch little Reagan for you. Go take a break.”
Adelina nodded, gave Reagan a soft kiss and kissed his cheek as well before heading out the door. Bonifacio sighed happily, walking to a chair and sitting down with Reagan in his arms. She squirmed a little and started to cry. Bonifacio rocked her gently, and began singing a soft, gentle lullaby, little more than a whisper. As he held Reagan cradled in his arms, looking down upon her perfection, her tiny hand gripping just one of his fingers, he felt that for once all was well. He felt that everything was going to be okay. “I will be strong for you, little one.” he whispered, placing a gentle kiss on Reagan’s soft skin. He continued his lullaby even after she’d drifted off to sleep, thoughts drifting over the past and perhaps looking toward the future.
