It was a good day, which was a surprise to poor Adolf. The past week or so had been so very, very sad. Adi and Adelina's baby had died, and Adelina hadn't wanted Adi to stay around. Needless to say since then, Adison had been very sad, and in such a dark place. Adolf knew what it was like to have people you loved die, living in the Carna pretty much ensured that. But Adolf had never seen Adison so upset - there had always been times where Adi had turned this way, angrier and angrier as something inside him ate up all his good.
It worried Adolf, especially since Adi had somewhat disappeared lately. It felt like it had been days since Adolf had last seen him, and in fact it had been. Something that Adolf rarely if ever let happen. Being apart from Adi, even for such a short time, left Adolf feeling more than just alone. He felt like he was losing the grip he had on the woman. She had been coming back more and more lately, to taunt him. Torture him. He trembled just thinking about her voice, just thinking about what she would say next. The silence was almost worse than when she spoke.
So Adolf had gone to see his mother. He always went to go find her when he was sad, or when Adi was too busy or too angry to pay attention to him. Even now as he sat on his cot in Studio Ess, there was a sudden peace that settled over him, even if he had been forced into pants. Mama was talking to Papa about something, and Adolf was content to just sit and listen to the familiar tones of their voices; Papa's deep baritone and Mama's soft murmur. It reminded him that the Carna wasn't his home, that he belonged here more than he did there. But he couldn't leave Adi alone with Manic, not when any day he could get hurt. And Adi would never leave the Carna. So Adolf would remain a Carna for him.
Adolf snapped back to attention when he heard his Papa's voice level raise, and Adolf could feel his temper rising. He gulped and got up, stepping toward his mother. "Mama? Let's go for a walk." he said with a smile, grabbing his mother's arm softly and pulling her towards the door. Laney nodded, and Adolf was overjoyed that he'd been able to head off one of his parent's famous arguments for once. It was progress! Beaming, he lead his mother outside for a nice stroll in the spring sun.
Adison had been in a dark place lately. Reagan’s death still weighed heavy on his mind, and no matter how much he tried to keep busy, something always reminded him of her; he’d hear a laugh from some Carna echoing through the tunnels and think of Reagan’s smile, or see couples huddled together in the Sewertown commonroom at night and think of him and Lina, and the nights they’d spend awake together just gazing down incredulously at the beautiful life they’d made. But all of that was gone now. Reagan, Adelina… he had nothing that really mattered anymore.
Adison paused and thought of his cousin Adolf, realizing he was the last person left that he could turn to. The Carna Head of Border Patrol felt a pang of guilt. He’d been totally ignoring the other man lately, turning away his help when Adison knew he really needed it. Setting his ego aside, Adi turned and set out for Studio Ess, where he knew his cousin would be for sure. He didn’t know why Adolf still bothered with them; His father was a stupid, hulking brute of a man, and his mother a conniving, traitorous woman as far as Adison was concerned. They’d both tried to kill him and his father before, multiple times when it came to Uncle Alkaos, and Adison would never drop his grudge against them. One day they’d get what they deserved, but today he just wanted to talk to Adolf.
As Adi neared the studio, he spotted the person he was looking for, walking arm-in-arm with the person he wasn’t looking for. A low growl formed in his throat as his pale brown gaze fell on Laney. A spark of anger surged through his body and Adison felt his temper already reaching a boiling point— it didn’t take much to set him off lately, and the worst part was that Adison was becoming used to it. It didn’t scare him anymore that a single off-hand comment from a scout could send him spiraling out of control, and send that scout straight to the medics. So when it came to people he truly hated, Adison had no control at all.
Not even greeting the cousin he’d come here to meet, Adison marched right over to them and in one quick movement, shoved Laney down to the ground. She barely had time to register what was going on before Adison was upon her. He slammed his fist into her perfectly featured face, and with his other hand, drew his combat knife from his boot. Laney let out a horrified scream and cried out for Adolf to help her, bringing a twisted smile to Adison’s face. “That’s right, scream!” He snarled, finding that for the first time in two weeks, he wasn’t thinking about Reagan, only his furious desire for revenge. And it was beautiful.

When Adolf scented Adison, his spirits rose. Maybe Adi was feeling better and had come to find him? Although Adison and Adolf’s parent’s didn’t get along at all, when Adolf was there they didn’t seem to regard each other at all. Adolf figured it was probably for the better, but he still wished that all of his family could get along. He’d recently learned that Adison really wasn’t his brother, but more like his Cousin. Which meant Manic was Adolf’s Uncle. And that Adolf’s Mom and Dad were likewise Adison’s Aunt and Uncle. All these titles still confused him and he considered Adi to be more than just his cousin. He was his brother, for sure. A brother who he trusted with his life, a brother he would do anything for.
But when Adison came toward his mother with that angry look on his face, Adolf was instantly set on edge. His nerves jangled and something within him awoke, an innate defensiveness rose within him. He moved to step in front of his mother but Adison was too quick, tackling her to the ground, hitting her in the face. Adolf stood as his mother screamed underneath his cousin, calling for help. The two sides of who he was fought and wrestled with each other; one, the beast that his father had created. The animalistic savage that would defend his loved ones until his last breath; but he had never really been presented with this situation before, where one of the one’s he was to protect was the attacker. And it was Adison.
He whined, a very dog-like sound, and he felt like he couldn’t move. He didn’t know what to do, so utterly conflicted. But when Adison drew his knife and when Adolf’s clear blue eyes alighted on the glinting steel of the blade, something snapped. Seeing his mother now in imminent danger, the fact that Adison was the one threatening her life held little value. Adison became, to him, no more than a faceless enemy who was threatening the one he loved the most.
With a savage roar, still in his human form, Adolf sprung forward and tore Adison off his mother, throwing him to the ground. Adolf shifted then into an enormous elephant, letting out a loud trumpet as Adison got to his feet and brandished the knife. Shaking his massive head, ivory tusks glinting, Adolf wrapped his trunk around Adison’s arm and squeezed and lifted, forcing Adison to drop the knife. He held his cousin dangling a few inches from the ground, level with his eyes. What Adison would see would be nothing like the Adolf he knew. His eyes were cold and emotionless, yet filled with such an intense madness, a savage rage.
His keen ears heard his mother still crying, could smell the blood trickling from her lip. With a grunt, Adolf tossed Adison to the ground. As soon as his body hit the cement, Adolf was on him again, this time as a bear. Hefty paws swinging down at Adison, blunt claws seeking to score through flesh.
