PERSONALITY: While Honora likes to consider herself something of a free spirit, she finds that her life is still dictated by pattern and order. Reaching as far back as she can remember her life has been scheduled and while most would find this somewhat stifling Honora feels that she is at her best when the day is planed. She is rigorous in her daily routines and does not like to have to readjust her schedule. But she is not so obsessed nor stubborn that she wouldn't bend to the supplication of friends or the direct order of a superior. She has an immense respect for hierarchy, as was trained into her since childhood. Yet she is not unquestioning or unthinking in her loyalty, and will challenge those above her if she thinks it necessary. Honora is a force to be reckoned with, to be sure. Once she has fixed something in her sights, she will not relent until it is accomplished or attained. She is extremely dedicated and notoriously relentless. She will work until she drops, then get up and work some more; it has become an issue in some respects as she can often work herself until she is sick. She gets so easily caught up in the goal that she neglects other aspects of life, including eating and drinking; yet to the surprise of many she seems to have an almost endless supply of energy and very little of it seems to be spent on herself. She is a very warm and considerate woman with an old soul; genuine, honest, and very nearly a pacifist at heart. But she has never been afraid to defend herself or her family from those that would harm them, and will do anything to protect those she deems her family. Friends are family, her Ringmates are family (even the more unsavory ones) and she will defend them to the death. But this does not mean that she trusts or loves blindly; rather, her love is not shared as freely as it once was. She was betrayed by her most trusted guardian, something that rocked her to her core and undermined the surest of her foundations. Her care for her Ringmates is a primal thing, driven almost by maternal instinct to protect what she considers her own. SECTION IV - SUBJECT BACKGROUND
SUBJECT HISTORY: Born into what most would consider an unusual household in New Zealand, Honora never had a truly "normal" childhood experience. She was the firstborn of a family that would expand to eight more siblings, for a total of nine children under one roof; add her two parents and her eccentric Aunt and you've got one busy house. Luckily they lived in her Aunt Helena's rather ancient mansion. A mansion that their ancestors had hand built generations ago--so while they lived in relative comfort, the house was constantly under reconstruction and their lifestyle was by no means extravagant. Her mother and father were married at young ages respectively, and started cranking out babies every two years or so after Honora was born. While her parents married and her mother Bronwyn was a stay at home mother for the most part, she kept her maiden name (St. John) and all the children took it as well, but all the St. John children were given the middle name Emrys , after their father's family name. Although Honora's parents were present for the entirety of her life prior to the dome, they were not necessarily a huge part of her life--not emotionally, anyway. The role of mother and nurturer was actually played by Honora's Aunt--Bronwyn's elder sister Helena St. John--a rather eccentric woman who made no room in her heart for anyone but Honora. Aunt Helena was an ex-UNIT military officer of extremely high rank and even higher honors. She retired rather young from her military career at the age of 46, after the loss of her wife Honoria, whom Honora was named after. Honora was born the very morning Honoria passed away; and some part of Helena believed that Honoria's spirit was reborn into her little niece and vowed to protect and love her until her dying breath--something which quickly turned into a rather unhealthy relationship for the both of them. Helena was an intense and passionate woman who to the world seemed quite the opposite, showing nothing but a dispassionate, disapproving face. Everyone she met seemed to fear incurring her wrath, even her relatives in the household feared her anger. Except Honora, the only one to see her smile since her wife's passing. Though Helena had retired from the military, her life did not change much. Driven for years by order and schedule, each day was rigorously planned for both herself and Honora. Once she was of age, Helena began training Honora in all manner of things. She was in charge of her schooling from math to English and everything in between. Honora spent long hours hunkered over books while her other siblings played outside or went to school, left relatively to their own devices. But for the early years of her life she loved every moment of it since it was spent with her Aunt, who had become more like a mother to her than her own mother had ever been. Honora didn't realize til much later this distance from her parents was due to Helena, who would scarcely let Honora out of her sight, not even to visit her parents. Beyond mere schooling, Honora was trained from the get-go to think like an officer in the UNIT military. She learned strategy and combat, weapons training, self defense, whatever Helena had learned in her years spent serving the government, Honora absorbed with eagerness. She was an adept student, a quick learner who was even quicker on her feet. Though Honora loved spending the long hours she did with her Aunt, as she aged she would sneak away to play with her younger siblings, of which Helena strongly disapproved. As it was Nora's parents became concerned that Helena's protectiveness of their daughter was bordering on obsessive as it got to the point where she was lectured if she ignored her duties to socialize, even with her own siblings and worse yet, themselves. Try as they might, they could not argue with Helena. They were almost completely reliant upon Helena for house and home, and food. Neither of them had jobs, though Avery made meager sums from his disability pay it was not nearly enough to support a family of 11. Despite the somewhat threatening presence of Helena, Nora's parents started to slowly separate the two that had been inseparable for years, which caused a lot of tension in the household. However, Nora enjoyed spending more time with other members of her family, especially her father. He approached her one evening when they'd all gone down to the beach and shown her a secret he'd kept, a gift kept hidden from the world. He shifted for the first time in front of her, into a magnificent albatross. He was confined to a wheelchair in his human form, his legs too weak to support him. But in the skies, he was free, and Nora watched in fascination as her father arced high and dove sharp, gliding through the clouds with ease. When he told her that she might be like him, that he sensed that same animal spirit in her Nora was beyond ecstatic. It took a few weeks of guidance from her father, hours spent on their secluded beach before she shifted for the first time, and took to the skies as a tiny sandpiper. She became a strong flier (even for such a tiny bird) alongside her father, and eventually she was joined by four of her other siblings who were also seabird shifters: Meade, Nolan, Phoenix and Osborne. The five of them formed tight bonds over their shared gifts and soon grew as inseparable as Nora and her Aunt had been. It caused a rift between them and a few months passed where they barely spoke one word to each other outside daily drills and lessons. It broke Nora's heart, but eventually the two made up. While Nora had been relatively well behaved as a child, as she aged into her teen years she became a bit of a rebel. She started dating at around 15, and started sleeping around at around 16. She was known to be wild at parties, though she never really drank or did drugs; she was able to let loose and be herself without the use of uppers and downers. She met an older man by the name of Quinton Gage who she didn't love--but he was beautiful and he was there. The two had an intense affair that lasted about a year before Nora discovered she was pregnant, at age 17. Quinton proposed but Nora rejected him, knowing that when she married she was going to do it for love, not out of some knee-jerk "taking responsibility" reaction. She had enough support to raise a child from both her parents and her Aunt, and she was confident in her own capabilities. Initially disappointed in her niece, Helena grew to accept her predicament. Nora's mother took a more active role in her life and helped her prepare for the baby, showering her with more love and affection than she'd ever gotten as a child. Looking back it seemed to Honora that she had been led her entire life. Told what to do and when by her Aunt. Nothing had been left up to her to decide. Her life was planned for her hour by hour, day by day, year by year. And though she loved her Aunt dearly she knew that she had no true control. But now she would be a mother herself. She could dictate her own life, and how she would live it. Honora's son Raleigh Briscoe St. John (in the tradition of her parent's penchant for naming) was born at home without any complications. Raleigh was only a year old, however, when events beyond the St. John family's control began to take place--the Shifter Hunts had begun. The family knew that they had to go into hiding immediately, and Nora's father decided that he would take Nora and the other Shifter siblings to hide out in the deep woodlands about 40 miles from their family home. But the family wouldn't be separated, no matter what. The plan was for all 12 of them to escape into the woods and torch the house, make it appear as if a mob had burned it down with the family inside. Unfortunately, things didn't exactly go as planned. Helena roused the children late at night from a house already burning from the top floor (all the children slept on the ground floor), leading them to a safe house Helena had built years ago, claiming that their parents would follow them. Honora and her siblings followed her into the woods, trusting her. Honora wasn't thinking of anything beyond her son and keeping him safe. But when the sun rose the next morning, Bronwyn and Avery still hadn't arrived. Honora and her Shifter siblings flew back to the house, finding nothing but the smoldering remains, and no sign of their parents. They couldn't search for long, as they heard UNIT coming up the drive. They fled back to the safe house, interrogating their Aunt. She explained that the fire had started accidentally in their parents room, and she hadn't been able to get them out in time. They were both dead from smoke inhalation. Helena broke down in tears as she spoke, crying for the first time in Nora's life. The shock of the situation was hard to bear, but they didn't have time to mourn. They had to keep moving. The family traveled mostly on foot, occasionally going into the smaller towns they came across to get food. They eventually made it to the safe house, nestled high up in the mountains. An old ski lodge that had been bought out by one of Helena's UNIT Pro-Shifter contacts. It wasn't easy living, and after a year or so living in the desolate lodgings the cold weather had taken its toll on Helena's aging body. Helena contracted pneumonia and without proper medical attention she took a turn for the worse one night. Honora stayed by her side all through the night, trying to make sense of her Aunt's mostly incoherent ramblings. Her Aunt kept calling her Honoria, telling her over and over again she was so sorry, that she couldn't protect her. In a brief lucid moment Helena grabbed Honora's hand and whispered that she did it to protect her. That her parents were trying to take her away from her, that her father would have slowed them down, that it was safer without them, that she'd poisoned them and left them to burn to keep Honora safe. She slipped back into her feverish haze and died a few hours later. Shock. Disgust. Rage. Honora was crippled by the murder of her parents. The betrayal of her Aunt. And yet still she mourned her Aunt's death. She spent a solid 15 minutes sobbing quietly to herself before she composed herself, buried her Aunt's body under a pile of stones (the ground was too hard and frozen over to dig), nursed her son, cooked her siblings breakfast (with some help from the other eldest Islwyn), and soldiered on. It took all her strength to keep her family together, and they made it another 6 months in isolation before they were discovered. Her sister Meade had been caught shoplifting, but managed to escape, shift, and fly to safety. She didn't think she had been tracked, but it wasn't but a week later that their safe haven was discovered. Honora had seen them coming and, ever prepared, sacrificed herself to save her brothers and sisters. She sent the non shifter siblings into a series of tunnels that had been carved into the mountain as tourist attractions. She and Meade then ran out and stood their ground, shifting at the last moment and flying off to distract UNIT officials. Her younger brothers Nolan and Osborne were told to stay put and act as guards, but they didn't want their older sisters to go out alone. They followed, attempting to attack the officers. Osborne was killed by accident, thrown aside by rough hands as he lunged at an officer. He hit his head on a rock as he fell into the snow. Nolan was captured coming to his brother's side. Phoenix, their last shifter sibling was scared half to death at only 6 years old, shifting and flying desperately after Nora. Nora was successful in leading a good many of the officers away, but when she saw Phoenix in her shift form, struggling to stay aloft in the harsh mountain currents she knew she wasn't going to escape. So she dove down, flapping next to her sister and leading her to safety, with Meade. She gave them both a hug and turned back, leading UNIT off in a different direction. She landed in the midst of them and fought them off, giving as good as she got. She knocked out a few of them before they tackled her, cuffed her and then continued to shock her until she stopped fighting. She stopped when she heard Meade's quiet scree over the howling winds, letting her know that they were safe. She knew that Meade would take care of them all, her son included. --- Nora spent about a year in testing before she was released into the dome. She chose to live by the bayside, to be closer to her father's spirit. She didn't mind the rather lax morals of the Carna, quite enjoying the freedom to lead her own life and not have the hectic responsibility of caring for 8 of her siblings, and a child, though she would never admit it. Life was hard, but she had been living it for a year and a half before the dome. She was used to adversity by now. There were new challenges, to be sure, but she faced them with all the training and education she had in her arsenal. She is slow to trust these days when before she had been an innately trusting person, so shaken was she by her aunt's betrayal, but she has her close friends as she has been in the Carna for about 3 years.
