Soft, almost silent whimpers came from dark shadows, slipping from a small, skinny little boy who seemed curled up in a little ball, sleeping. His fingers twitched as the whimpering continued, sounding completely as if they came from an animal, a tiny little dog. The whimpers shifted into a growl, a low snarl that made his lip twitch, eyes flickering frantically beneath soft little eyelids, blond lashes twitching as, in his dream world, the little boy searched for his prey.
The boy, no older than six, was naked, curled in as tight of a ball that he could manage to drive of the chill of the room, despite the shift into spring - he had a few blankets resting about, a few scraps of food here and there, and a little box where he did his business. Around his left ankle there was a shackled chain, though by now he barely even knew it was there - it wasn't tight, nor really cruel - and he didn't mind it. Adolf, that was his...well that was what his father called him, for he really understood very little of any language, even the infamous Shiftertongue that seemed to flow naturally between him and his father when they practiced. It was those few hours a day when Alkaos unshackled him and let him run around a bit.
The time with his father was fun; and it was this thought that he woke up to, expecting to see his dad walking in through the warehouse door any moment - he looked to the double doors that were barred and shut tightly (only his father knew how to get in), about 30 feet away, still shrouded in darkness. There was very little light in the nearly empty warehouse - all Adolf had for company was several stacks of boxes that he climbed on when he was bored, and a little cave-like shelter Alkie had crafted for him so he could hide and keep warm during the winter and when he slept.
He woke up, though, for perhaps the millionth time since he could remember, alone. Adolf began whimpering again, the long, dark shadows suddenly taking on evil, scary forms...his whimpers soon grew louder, as he cried out for his father in the only way he knew how.

Adison ::

Pale brown eyes closed with a contented sigh as Adison wandered about the Carna Ring Docks, the spring sunshine warm against his face. At ten years old, he knew the place like the back of his hand. He knew most of the best hiding places, and where the food and supplies were hidden if he ever needed them. In fact, he knew the Carna territory better than a lot of the scouts whose job it was to patrol it. They hadn’t been in the area nearly as long as Adison had, for he was one of the Menagerie’s rarities: A child born inside of the enclosure. The Scouts who ran along the borders all day were dumped in the Menagerie by the keepers, and had to be trained to do their jobs.
Adison huffed quietly to himself. If only he were old enough to be a scout. It was what he wanted more than anything; that and his father’s approval, of course, though he felt at the moment that becoming a Scout was a more realistic goal. Ever since he had been promoted to Tenderfoot, Adison had been running about training and trying to prove himself worthy for the job. From his skills, gained simply from growing up in the hostile territory, he seemed quite adept for the job. Perhaps it was just a matter of time…One day he’d have it. Perhaps he’d even have to beat out the current head of border patrol, his own Uncle Andreas. Adison wouldn’t mind that though, since he knew his pushover of an uncle would still try and be friends with him. He scoffed slightly at the desperation he knew was there, though it was a bit ironic— Adison was desperate for companionship as well. Uncle Andi just wasn’t the best option.
And animalistic wailing noise caught his ears as he began to walk past one of the many warehouses that littered the bay area. Adison froze in his tracks, trying to consider what could have possibly made such a noise. Whatever it was, it sounded scared or hurt. Injured prey, perhaps? Adison doubted it could be a person, just because it had sounded so much like an animal. Either way, it would be good for him! He’d either get a free meal or a possible friend! Adison approached the door, not surprised when he found it to be locked. Most of the warehouses were locked up, especially the ones that contained food and supplies. Adi had found a way around that, though, and quickly shifted into his Border Collie form, ready to use his knowledge to his advantage.
His strong nose, which had become even keener as of late, easily sniffed out a section of rotting wood at the side of the warehouse, where a plank had been used to patch up a hole. Using his claws, Adison broke through the weakened section of wood, and wriggled his body through the opening he had created. The warehouse was dark, damp, and chilly inside, and Adison could feel the cold even through his thick fur. He shifted back into human form then, so he could at least use his jacket to warm himself. “Hello?” He called out, as he followed the whimpering sounds.
Once he was close enough, Adison ducked behind a few crates, his heart racing as he wondered what he would find. Slowly, he peered out from the side of the boxes, his wild, curly hair falling into his face. With a pale hand, Adison pushed the curly locks away to get a better look at the creature in front of him. Whatever it was, it was chained to a nearby pipe. Whatever it was, someone wanted to keep it here. Adison stepped out from behind the crates and into view of the creature, which he suddenly realized was a little boy, younger than himself. Still, what a perfect companion! “Hey there,” Adison smiled, walking up close to him and sitting down next to the boy. “My name’s Adison…Who are you? Why are you chained up?” He questioned, pointing to the shackle that kept Adolf prisoner. “And…naked?” Adison frowned, picking up a nearby blanket and tossing it over the other boy’s body. “There, that’s better.”
Adison couldn’t remember the last time he’d spoken to another person this much, outside of Ring matters… He was getting along with this kid already!
A small, strange voice echoed in his warehouse, and though the voice was only a bit deeper than his own, it frightened him beyond all belief. That wasn't his father! Who was it, who was it? Deep, bold blue eyes, round and wide with innocence and filled with deep dread, peered over a small crate, the dark navy rim fading the icy blue seemed eerily human yet completely animal at the same moment. A low snarl, a warning, to the dim shape that moved in the distance as it squeeze through some boards. Adolf watched the thing move closer, shuddering in disbelief...
What was this thing? This dark, evil shadow? It had come here to hunt him down, hadn't it? He knew very little of language, but he and his father had learned a way of communicating, more through growls and the occasional open palmed slap across the face or back of the head. But his dad had warned him that intruders meant certain death - he tried his best to hide from this thing, but he was too late, as he saw the demon thing cast a shadow over him. Tall and skeletal, reaching for him with evil claws, tossing a net over him, trying to take him away and kill him! Adolf snarled, growled and whimpered all at once in a strangled noise that didn't do justice to the terror he felt. Hush, boy. He's not here to hurt you. The soft, honey sweet voice in his head calmed him slightly, and he stopped struggling under the blanket, just enough to peek over the edge of the ragged thing to peer at Adison.
“My name’s Adison…Who are you? Why are you chained up?” The words made little sense to him, except the word 'name'. He'd heard that somewhere before, though he wasn't quite sure where. Come now, Adolf. You can answer him - just tell him who you are. The voice - that of a woman, whispered softly again, nudging him forward so that he sniffed at Adison, deep blue eyes glistening with curiosity, though his body was poised and tensed, ready to flee as far as the chain would let him. Pale blond hair fell in waspish wisps around his eyes as he tried to make sense of what the boy had said. A small, skinny hand lifted and he pointed to himself, hesitantly. "...Adolf." He had difficulty mouthing the word, though he mimicked the voice for pronunciation.
Yes, yes. That's a good boy! You've made a friend, Adolf! The small boy grinned wolfishly, small, toothy smile bright and happy, eyes suddenly carefree as he inched closer to Adison, still on hands and knees, the blanket wrapped around him although he didn't understand 'nakedness'. He simply smiled up at Adison, nodding happily. "Adison!" He chirruped, his tiny little voice seeming stronger already. He couldn't even remember why he'd been afraid in the first place!

Adison smiled as the boy seemed to become less frightened of him. “Adolf, huh? That’s an interesting name,” He mumbled to himself, though he was unsure if the boy could understand him. Adison watched the younger child’s face as he spoke, and finally realized that he was only picking up on key words that he might have known. “Aren’t you too old not to know how to talk?” Adison questioned almost mockingly, but he doubted that Adolf understood his tone.
Adison sighed and moved on, eyes falling onto the chain that held his new friend in place. “Well,” He began, picking up the chain and tugging on it a little. “If you’re going to be my new best friend, I’m gonna have to get you out of here. I’m not gonna come back here to play every day!” He continued to talk, although the other little boy would only know a bit of what he was saying. Adison kinda liked it, just having someone to speak his mind to in general, whether he got anything back or not…It would have been nicer if Adolf spoke back some more. “And once we get out of here, we’re gonna have to work on your talking.”
He paused to smile at Adolf for a moment, reassuring him that he was here to be his friend. “Let’s see if I can get this stupid chain off,” Adison followed the length of the chain and soon enough found the place where it was attached to a metal pipe. He looked around for a key, but found none. Well, he’d just have to take it off by force! Adison grinned at the pipe, staring it down as if it were an enemy that could understand him. “You sure you want to do this the hard way, pipe?” He questioned. After a short pause, he tightened his grip on the chain and pulled back as hard as he could. Much to his surprise, the chain hadn’t been locked at the other end at all, and Adison fell backwards, chain in hand. “Oomph! …Well, it’s off.”
He got up slowly, rubbing his sore behind. “Ready to go on an adventure, Adolf?” Adison questioned, tugging slightly on the chain that was still connected to Adolf’s leg. “Let’s go play outside!” Adison pulled a bit harder in the direction of his makeshift entry point, wanting to get out of the creepy warehouse already. “C’mon, before someone finds us!”
