He stumbled through the streets, roving like some mad, helpless animal that seemed lost beyond all doubt. His limp was pronounced and pained even as he groped in the cold morning hours for some semblance of reality - some tangible life line to which he could hold; navy blue eyes locked onto the flat expanse of desert beyond, bandaged body lurching forward as he headed for that which he sought.

This was it. Time to suck it up and face her father. She had to tell him - how could she not? Her heart plummeted at the very thought of the disappointed look on his face. That scourge of masked anger that she knew so well - lately her father had been fraying. She could sense it - especially after the Burning (what the Fulsi apparently termed the disastrous Carna raid), he seemed to be coming apart at the seams. Adelina wondered if he could handle this news. Maybe...maybe it would help. Maybe he would finally come to live with her and their family - in the Fallen, the place where he belonged. Maybe this child would change everything.
She stood in the empty building, derelict as the rest of the world around her, her hand resting on the slight swell of her belly; she heard a clatter off to her right, teal eyes wide with shock as her father stumbled through the door, leaning heavily on the frame. When he pulled himself up to a straighter stance, she stepped forward and hesitantly reached out to him. As she watched him sway on his feet her heart lurched and she felt tears springing to her eyes. She’d never seen him like this - his navy eyes, usually so clear so sharp, glittering with eerie awareness. But...this wasn’t her father. It couldn’t be. “Papa...” She said, realizing her voice came out a hoarse whisper, a knot tying itself in her throat. “Papa? Are you okay?”
"Of course,” He slurred, attempting a smile. It ended up falling pathetically short and his face fell, brows furrowed in confused agony. A stifled flood of emotion overtook him and he hung his head, bandaged hand cradling the scarred face. He was bent and broken and spent - and drunk. She could smell the alcohol from where she stood, the shock still written plainly on her dutifully cleaned face. She was wearing her best dress, she’d washed her face, and even combed her hair just like she always did for his visits. “Lina...” He said, voice muffled in his hand. “You said...we needed to...talk.”
“Papa...” She whispered, voice trembling. She couldn’t go through with his. No. Not when he was like this - not when he was in such pain. Her body shook terribly, trembling violently as she watched her father fall to pieces. Her hero, her idol, crumbling before her. She couldn’t tell him - she wouldn’t. Her thoughts roared in her mind, overwhelming her and she felt as if she were to burst. “Papa I’m pregnant!” She shouted, covering her mouth with a sharp, shuddering gasp.
His swaying stopped abruptly and he watched her from behind hazed, drunken eyes, disbelief dominant - slowly, surely, a horrible anger began to make itself known. Silence seemed to suffocate them both, him as he seethed and reeled and attempted to make sense of what she’d said. It couldn’t be true. No. She was too young. Too innocent.
His eyes cast abruptly to the dirt strewn cement beneath their feet, minutes dragged by as the silence reached a crescendo. “Whore.” The word fell harsh and blunt from his scarred lips as his eyes flicked beneath a heavy brow to capture her stricken face. “You whore!” He shouted, lunging forward to grab her by the shoulders, breath rank with whisky, eyes crazed and unfocused as his nails dug fiercely into her flesh. “You...you are not my daughter!” His voice seethed madness as he searched her face for some explanation, but found only hurt. And shame. He released her and stumbled back, raising a trembling finger to point accusingly as she stood rigid, tears streaming down her paled cheeks. “You cannot be...”

Golden paws padded along the scorching sand of the FallenRing territory, his pads burning from his long journey. Adison had been home in the Carna for weeks already, but every moment his thoughts had been dominated by images of Adelina, thoughts of her and his baby. Though he had been happy back home doing border patrols again, Adison knew that he needed to return to the Fallen; Adelina needed him, and so would his baby. The tiger’s fur bristled excitedly at the thought, and he bounded onward with an extra spring in his step. He was going to be a father! It was odd that a boy his age would be so excited at the prospect, but Adison could only think of all the things he’d do for that child, how he’d give it all the love that he had wanted for himself.
As he neared the Station, the Carna shifted back into his human form. Pale brown eyes scanned the immediate area, but he found no one. Where was everyone? Adison guessed they were all off on their own duties or something, perhaps dealing with the trouble-making Fulsi. He’d gotten through the border seamlessly, timing his crossing between patrols. He knew the Fallen’s schedule by heart from his few weeks there; he didn’t want anyone sending word on ahead that he was back, or perhaps stopping him from entering the Ring at all. Adison supposed Adelina had told them; they were bound to be angry with him.
A familiar voice floated on the breeze, and Adi froze. Adelina was here! He listened harder and another voice reached him, unfamiliar. The Carna boy started toward the sounds, sensitive nose scenting the area. Adelina’s familiar smell stood out in particular, but the man’s he hadn’t encountered before, but it smelled like …a Fulsi?! Adison snarled and raced inside the station to find the stranger holding Adelina by the shoulders. ’You whore!’
“Adelina!” Without hesitation, Adison rushed at the man, barreling into him at full speed, sending them both to the cold concrete. “Don’t you talk to her like that!” He snarled, pinning the man to the ground. He was stinking drunk by the smell of him, and Adison with his heightened senses nearly felt drunk just being so close. “I love her!”
Adison turned to look back at the startled Adelina, his face etched with sincerity and regret. “I do, Lina, I love you. And our baby.”
Her world seemed wrenched in two as the words sputtered from her father's lips. She held for him the highest respect, her love for him burning fiercely in her chest - she couldn't bear to see the shame, the pure disappointment in his hazed blue eyes as he glared at her from across the room. She knew it just wasn't the alcohol speaking - she knew it. She could feel it in her bones - a coldness that seeped from her heart and spread to her limbs. She was numb. Numb as his words seemed to bleed her dry of all that seemed to matter. Her father would never know how much his words, his respect - his pride in her, truly mattered. How could he, when he seemed so lost? So terribly lost...
She gasped and stepped back in surprise, instinctively wrapping her hands around her slightly swollen belly to protect the accursedly precious child growing within as a vivid blur tackled her father to the ground. "Adison!" Was all she could say, struck speechless at his act of apparent...love? She wiped hastily at the tears streaking down her face, afraid to show a trace of fear or weakness in front of him.
She watched her father struggle with Adison and she stepped forward and dragged Adi off him, and pulling her to him in a fierce hug that she refused to end. "I love you too," She whispered and kissed his cheek, holding his face gently between her hands. "But if you ever tackle my Papa again..." She winked and kissed him on the nose, though it was obvious she was completely serious.
It had all happened so fast, she felt as if it weren't really. As if the man she loved hadn't just announced his love and defended her against the disappointment her father threw at her. At which point she remembered him, sprawled on the floor in a sad, drunken display. She kneeled next to him, petting his cheek softly. "Oh, Papa," She said, sighing sadly when he rested big hand on hers and pulled it away.
"Adelina..." he murmured, tears pricking at his eyes. "I am...I cannot..."
Coward. She bit back, but she managed a pathetic smile at him. "I know Papa. I know it hurts. But it will be okay, in time. You'll see." She leaned down and kissed him on the cheek, and helped him into a sitting position. He glared at Adison underneath heavy, furrowed brows.
"He smells...of Carna." He grunted, swiping lazily at him.
"Papa, this is...this is Adison," She drew in a sharp breath, breaking into a suddenly wide grin. "The one who knocked me up."
Bonifacio winced and nearly passed out again, but it seemed the moment had passed - the moment of shame and disappointment was replaced with the fondness he had for her blunt, frank speech despite her gleaming intellect. He cradled his head in his hands for a moment, before extending one to Adison, hardly believing this was even happening. Never had he thought to see the day.
"Adison." He grimaced at the name and held back his desire to whisk Adelina away and protect her like the child he still saw her as. But he knew, in some small way he would like to deny, that his daughter was growing up. And soon to be a mother herself. A knot tied itself in his throat and refused to budge as he gripped the Carna boy's hand a little too harshly, growing suddenly defensive of the daughter he had just recently denounced. "Watch your step, boy. This is my daughter." He pulled him in close, locking eyes suddenly stern. "You will stay with her - do not leave her again. Capisce?"

Adison watched Adelina and her drunken father with a mixture of disgust and pity. How could she be so kind to him when he’d just been so cruel? He wished more than anything to really show the man how much he loved her and how much he disapproved of his current state, but only Adelina’s warning held him back. There was no use picking another fight with Bonifacio when it would only upset Lina again. So, he stood a few steps away and merely watched, the corner of his lips turned in a slight scowl as he stared at Bonifacio.
The man held out his hand then, though, and Adi was forced to take it in his own, lest Adelina pummel him for being rude to her father. He raised a brow curiously as the drunken man’s grip tightened, but nearly gagged as he spoke. The waves of alcohol rolling off of him were starting to make Adison sick, and he felt that he might even get drunk just from being near the man. He kept a straight face as best he could, that is, until Bonifacio threatened him.
Adison snatched his hand away and brushed it off on his jacket – since he still hadn’t found another shirt— and stepped closer to Adelina. “Don’t worry, Pops, I’m here for her,” He answered as calmly as he could, holding back the ’unlike you’ that echoed in his mind, or the possible backhand to the face. Instead, he wrapped his arms around Adelina, pulling her close so that her belly touched his.
“I’m not going anywhere, Lina,” he promised, pressing a gentle kiss to her lips. “We’re gonna have a beautiful baby.”
