8:00 AM. Woke up with headache. Vision blurry for a few minutes. Worried if tumors are back – no way to be sure.
It was a day like any other day, one with no promises or hopes or guarantees of living to see the next. His head was throbbing violently, a splitting migraine lingering just behind is eyes. Which were bloodshot from lack of sleep. He seldom slept soundly in this place, though even before coming to The Menagerie he hadn’t gotten much rest into the long hours of the night, spent pouring over the thick tomes of his studies. He missed his medical reference books. To be consumed in their long, detailed texts was a joy that he craved. In fact, any book would be a welcomed sight. But books were rare here – in fact he doubted that there was still anything left that people hadn’t burned as fuel for fire.
8:05. Saw a song-bird on a branch. It is the same bird have seen every morning. Wonder if he knows he’s imprisoned. Gave food to Bessy.
Hector sighed and rolled off his cot, staring straight into the big, round eyes of his little friend – a rat he’d found trying to eat some of his food. Hector smiled and picked her up, scratching behind her soft round ears like she liked. Knowing that she had little rattlings to feed, Hector rummaged around in his food kit for some scraps. He broke off a nice little chunk of bread for her and the rat grabbed it hungrily before dashing back through the hole in the wall.
8:10. Time for morning duties. Trying not to think about Mother and Father and if they are okay with out me.
Fixing up his clothes, Hector nodded to himself in the cracked mirror on the wall of his tiny room, trying to reassure himself that everything would be fine. He would stick to his routine and nothing would go amiss – it would be as if any other day. Grabbing his medic bag tightly, he headed out the door of his room.
8:12. Pep talk. Be confident!
He walked down the halls which were flooded with his fellow Fulsi in the early morning. He averted his eyes from them though he knew a few of them, nearly having a panic attack when one of them bumped his shoulder and sent him spinning into a wall, all without even a glance his way. Hector sighed, shaken but not discouraged from his mission. He would get to his duties this morning without being late, without becoming a crumbling mess in the corner. Settling himself he ran a quick hand through his curly hair, nodding to himself again. He pulled out his notebook and scribbled down his quick thoughts.
8:20. Rude man in hallway. Stayed strong – this is progress!
Snorting after the rude man who’d long since gone on his way, Hector made his way to the Medics Wing. He managed to meet the eyes of the man in charge, but only for the briefest of moments. The man’s gruff exterior frightened him slightly, so he ducked his head and waited for orders. “You’re on scouting detail, Glock. They’re just about to head out, so you best hurry.” Hector nodded, following the man’s orders and hugging his bag close, he scurried out to find the patrol. He saw Dalton, the newest Head of Border Patrol and made towards him, who kindly pointed out the patrol he was to accompany. It was a very small patrol, being sent to the mall to check for a supply drop. With him, the count would only be three.
8:35. Assigned to a scouting patrol. Odd number on patrol, three. Apprehensive about outcome.
He nodded to the patrol and the lead man grunted, turning and heading off towards the mall. Oh, this wouldn’t be good. He noticed the girl next to him, a pretty black haired Scout. Something seemed different about her – the way she seemed to bounce around with boundless energy. His nerves jangling, already uneasy at the fact of having to go to on such a small patrol, and now faced with a very pretty lady in his company. “I’m…I’m Hector Glockner, but everybuddy calls me Heck. 'M a Medic…” he paused, hurrying to keep up with them. “Nice to meet ya, cher.” He said, his thick New Orleans accent shining through. He tried a smile, casting his eyes away before offering a hand to shake as they set off toward the mall.

[atrb=width,450,true][atrb=border,0,true][bg=645994] The thing was, Mikurei was nervous. She was bouncing on the balls of her feet, although nerves made perspiration trickle down the back of her neck as she looked to the larger, gruff man that she was to go on patrol with. She looked down to her hands, which she wrung together tightly as she breathed slowly, in and out, she repeated the mantra in her head over and over before she looked up quickly as they started off, a new face tagging along with them. She noticed the nervous nature he seemed to put off as she smiled softly, reaching out to take his hand and shake it lightly.
"It's nice to meet you too .. Heck," she tested the nickname as she looked up and through bangs towards him. She glanced ahead of them at Dirk and shook her head, "don't mind the big brute ahead of us, he's just all business and no manners, his name's Dirk. Mine is Mikurei .. though call me Miku for short, please," she said and let off a smile with teeth this time before she focused on the task at hand and looking forward. She felt a little short of breath but she pushed on, matching Dirk's pace as usual as they made their way towards the mall.
Seeing the building come into view a little while later made the girl relieved, as her heart was hammering in her chest, catching up to the pace that the larger man had set. She liked going with him because of his size and his abilities, he always had her back in a fight, but sometimes she wished he had a shorter stride. Coming to the main entrance she saw movement out of the corner of her eye and wheeled around, eyes narrowing as her arms stayed out on either side of her. She forced her breath to be quiet, taking slow breaths as she motioned to the medic to be quiet and hissed to Dirk.
"D .. I think we've got company.. "

“Dirk?” he repeated fuzzily, wishing he hadn't tucked his small notebook back into his pocket. He wanted to document the names and descriptions of these folk before he outright forgot them. It was likely that by the time they got back from the patrol he might not remember their names; his memory loss had been getting worse, and though it hadn't actually affected much, it was starting to become more noticeable when he forgot even his friends names'. Not that he had many friends to begin with - but that's what he was working on, and why he had volunteered to go on more Patrols. He'd heard high stress situations where you had to rely on your Ringmates led to faster connections. More injuries, he guessed, too. Swallowing hard he nodded absently at Mikurei's introduction as they moved off toward the mall.
He fell behind, struggling to keep up with the fast pace Dirk set. He wasn't in the best of health - skinny and gaunt and prone to cold sweats, Hector didn't enjoy strenuous activities like this. But it was all for the cause of trying to be more social. They reached the mall soon enough, and Heck was still huffing and puffing and trying to catch up with the other two scouts when he saw them freeze. They looked very tense, and he heard Miku say that they might have company. "Hardly seems the time fo' guests," he muttered, pulling to a stop next to her when she motioned for him to do so. He looked around placidly, unaware of the danger for the time being. Hector heard an odd scuttling noise, like the rustle of bristly fur. He followed Dirk's eyes to the entrance, taking a step back when Dirk stepped forward hesitantly.
It all happened so fast, Hector was barely aware of what was happening. A blinding flash of white erupted and a sticky substance wrapped itself around Dirk like some sort of net. Dirk shouted something and Hector stumbled backward as some of the substance sprayed onto him. It was saliva! Heck tried to brush it off but it became sticky instantly and hardened some, at which point Heck looked up into Dirk's round brown eyes; or what he could see between the sticky threads on his face and entire body. This was all in a moment's time before a monstrous, strangled screech rang out and Dirk was pulled off his feet and dragged toward the dark entrance to the mall. Hector lunged forward and tried to grab his hands, but it was too late. The last thing Hector saw of Dirk was his body being dragged through the shattered glass doors of the entrance, and a scream that was cut sickly short.
"A trap," he breathed, the word almost catching in his throat. He was shaking visibly, waiting for the rest of the Carna to emerge from the shadows. But he heard crunching noises, like bones being chewed. Was it Carna? "W-What do we do, cher?" he asked, face paling. Hector didn't think it was possible for him to get any paler, but when the thing that had killed Dirk emerged from the building, his face paled a shade more. It was massive. Standing at least seven feet high, with eight spindly, bristling legs like that of a spider...the torso and head of a woman, except her mouth was replaced with gnashing pincers that were dripping with fresh blood. From the belly button down, she was an arachnid. Eight legs and a black body with a menacing looking tail at the end - that of a scorpion. He knew now what the sticky substance all over Dirk had been. A web.
"Mein Gott," he wheezed, grabbing for Miku's arm to drag her backward. He'd never seen a creature like this, but he knew what it was. A Virus.

[atrb=width,450,true][atrb=border,0,true][bg=645994] She felt her heart pounding in her chest, her skin paling to a sickly color as the web wrapped itself around Dirk, a small gasp escaping her lips as she tried to run forward as he was pulled off his feet, her hand grabbing a handful of the webbing before it snapped from its place on the man as he was pulled away. "Damnit!" she growled low in her throat as she scrambled up and then froze as Dirk's screams where cut short by crunching ... bones.
She shuddered as she teared up a bit at the corners of her eyes, her chest starting to heave even though they had been standing still for quite a bit, her heart pounding in her ears as she stared as the creature came out. She felt the hand tug on her arm as she looked down to it to then follow the arm up to Heck's face, her paleness seeming to rival his own although she didn't really notice this fact. She stumbled as he pulled her glancing over her shoulder only once as the spider creature began forward before she started to run, grabbing Heck's hand as she went.
"We have to find a way ... out of here .. fast," she said between gasps as her eyes darted around them, her vision starting to become blurry on the edges as they went. Blinking furiously she pulled Heck around a corner, the clicking and shuffling from the monster not quite around the corner yet before she pulled them into a dark store. She pulled him around the counter inside and pulled him down to the floor where she let his hand go, her back against the counter as she closed her eyes. Her hand going to her chest as she fought the nausea and the fact she was beginning to loose consciousness. Her eyes fluttering open as she looked ahead, eyes glazed over as everything seemed to slow around her, a fog settling over her it seemed.
It was obvious she wasn't actually hurt in anyway just yet, but the fact was that her head was starting to roll and bob as she fought for consciousness.
ooc; poor Heck ... first the big bodygaurd goes down. and now he's got a .. damsel in distress lol.

It was all happening so fast, his brain could barely process it. There was no routine in this, no comfort in these high stress situations that he simply wasn't born to handle. His brain wasn't wired right for stuff like this. He felt like he couldn't breathe, his chest restricting as he tried to pull Mikurei into a run. He was moments from panicking when her hand wrapped around his, and for some reason it gave him comfort. His hand was clammy against hers and he tried to keep up with her, his long legs scrambling to keep ahead of the monster.
His strength surprisingly didn't seem to be fading, not like it normally did - it was probably the adrenaline coursing through his veins. He'd never been more terrified in his life! Feet hammering on the asphalt as he followed Mikurei, he was taken off balance when she jerked him quickly to the side and straight into dark, musty store. The door slammed behind them, and as Mikurei yanked him down behind the counter he sent up a prayer. He wasn't one for religion really, but in times like this one couldn't help but ask for a little extra help. He heard the Virus whisk past, the strange clacking sound from it's jaws echoing off the walls.
Heck gulped, eyes wide and darting from side to side, examining every shadow as he let go of Mikurei's hand and got to his feet, grabbing a long metal pole that looked like it had been used for reaching high-shelf items. It would do for now. He crept towards the door and stuck the pole through the door handles. It probably wouldn't keep the thing out for long, but it would give them time to plan. His breathing finally slowed and he turned back to Mikurei, surprised to see that her breathing hadn't. Her chest was still heaving and her head was lolling to the side, bobbing now and then as she faded in and out of consciousness. "Mikurei?" He said, eyebrows furrowed in concern. "You you alright, cher?"
When she made a weak mumble in reply, Hector reached out and held her head gently between his hands, palms on either side of her face. His eyes adjusted to the dimness of the room, he could just barely make out the dazed and hazy look of her eyes. Her breathing was still as rapid as when they had been running, and she was on the verge of sever hyperventilation. Hector pressed two fingers to her carotid, eyes narrowing when her pulse came back way too fast. He couldn't be 100 percent certain but her symptoms looked like some variation of tachycardia. He grabbed her face between his hands again, kneeling beside her he leaned in closer to her, trying to get her eyes to focus on him. "Mikurei, hun, Imma need to you focus." he said, trying to keep his voice steady and even. It wasn't difficult - he always found it so easy to take charge when medical issues cropped up.
"I need you to try 'n plug your nose real good with your hands, and blow out against it. Like yous tryna pop your ears, you know cher?" Hector felt her head lolling even in his hands, and he knew that he was losing her to a blackout. Grunting, Hector let go of her momentarily and she slumped forward. He grabbed her shoulders, thinking quickly - the only other good way to treat tachycardia. He pulled her against him so that she was basically laying partially in his lap, cradling her carefully in his arms like she was some fragile creature. His hand went to her carotid again, seeking out the carotid sinus. He began to rub his fingers gently along her neck, in essence massaging it so that it would steady the beat of her heart. It worked after a few minutes, and he could feel her pulse and breathing slow considerably. He leaned over her and continued with the procedure a bit longer, just to ensure she was all the way through.

[atrb=width,450,true][atrb=border,0,true][bg=645994] Mikurei could barely focus as her vision swam in front of her, a low rumble she heard being that of Heck. She wasn't exactly sure what he had said but she heard the worried tone in his voice and she attempted to respond to him, in her mind the response of her being fine being clear even though it didn't come out like that. She felt cool hands against her face, just realizing now that she was feverish and a small whimper came from the back of her throat. She saw him then in front of her, blinking her eyes forcefully as he spoke softly to her as he said something about blowing through her nose. What was this? They had to worry about the virus! She tried to lift her hand to brush his own hands away but it only succeeded in her fingers wrapping around his elbow weakly before she felt him loosen his grip.
Next thing she felt was her body slumping forward before nothing at all. It seemed like forever before she began to come to, her body leaning against someone else as a hand massaged her neck. She swallowed forcefully, her fingertips tingling like they usually did after waking up from one of her episodes. She let out a soft sigh as her eyes fluttered open to adjust to the darkness and up to see that she was laying in that medic's lap. She was instantly grateful for the darkness as a blush crept onto her cheeks as she breathed a fewer deep breaths, her eyes focusing on his face then as she breathed, "Heck.. ? I'm .. I'm sorry I didn't mean to ... ," she sighed with a small frustrated tone in the back of her throat as she looked away and then hesitantly back up at him; not moving as she actually found it .. a little comfortable.

"Pauve ti bete," poor little thing, he murmured when she finally gained consciousness. He brushed some of the sweat-laced hair from her face, noticing that his own forehead was dotted with beads of sweat. He smiled hesitantly down at her, suddenly very aware of her closeness. It was an invasion of his space, something he couldn't handle very well - now that the moment of crisis had faded he was very aware of his nerves jangling and the alarm bells clamoring in his mind. He had never been good around women, especially pretty ones like her. His heart skipped a few beats and he felt light headed and uncomfortable. He couldn't read her expression, and the tone in her voice sounded something like the frustration he often felt at his social disabilities. Still, he wasn't exactly sure if that's what her tone was reflecting, but he figured that he could risk this one misunderstanding.
"Ain't no need to worry none, cher. It ain't like it's your fault, anyhow." He cleared his throat and smiled down at her, trying his best to keep eye contact. He couldn't manage it for more than a few seconds at a time, but he tried his best. "You do know that it ain't somethin' you can really control, right cher? It ain't nuttin but genetics, really."

She heard him say something, and wondered if she was still out of it, though her mind connected the dots only moments later to tell her that he spoke softly in another language. She felt him brush the hair from her face and she let her eyes close, loving the gentle touch and feeling it gave her; or comfort mostly. "How is it not my fault? I don't even know what's going on with me," she said softly, in a tone that spoke of the frustration she held as she looked down to her lap before she looked back up at him, a hand reaching up to gently grasp his shirt though she was hardly aware of what she did just then.
"It's like I feel it happening but I can't stop it," she said softly as she had sat up slightly now, her face close to his as she felt her heart in her throat at this feeling as they were now almost ... well the feelings in her stomach were both confusing and nothing that she expected to feel as she gulped hard and looked down quickly to where her hand was. Letting go quickly her hand hovered there as she looked back up and her hand slowly laid back on his chest as she leaned forward to kiss him on the cheek softly. "If anything I am grateful that you were here with me .. thank you," she said softly as she pulled back and looked to him, her breathing a little fast though nothing that focusing on her breathing couldn't help as she took a few slow breaths as she kept averting her eyes but finding them pulled back to him.

Hector looked down at Mikurei, for once able to maintain eye contact for more than two seconds. Perhaps it was what he had correctly (for once!) assumed was frustration in her voice, perhaps it was the common thread he could share with her. He too had debilitating issues. His hands would often shake, and in fact he suffered from seizures when his emotions got out of control. It was why he kept so distant from everyone, so far from their strange emotions that he couldn't read or hardly understand. He didn't like to be confused, and around other people all he ever was was confused. And Mikurei seemed confused, too. Maybe that was why he found himself slightly more at ease with her, even if she was cradled in his arms.
He had always been a caring person, yes, but never one to touch or give physical comfort. She seemed to relax though, and that was what she needed - and as a medic, it has his job to give her exactly what she needed, no matter his personal views. And he enjoyed when he was able to bring understanding to a suffering patient, especially when he could help her prevent this from happening again. Assuming he was right - which he mostly likely was. Hector cleared his throat, and launched into an explanation.
"I ain't one hunned percent on it, Mikurei, but I think you got somethin' whats called tachycardia. It usually refers to a heart rate that exceeds the normal range for a resting heart rate; basically your heart be beatin' too fast for it to work proper, and it makes your breathin' real crazy like." He said. "It ain't your fault cos there ain't no real way to control it. You can try your damndest but more 'n likely it happens when yous stressed out or is real scared. But I can teach ya how to help treat if when you is by your lonesome." He finished, nodded confidently. When she reached up and grabbed the collar of his shirt, Hector gulped, his eyes going wide as she pulled against his shirt and pulled herself up, placing a gentle kiss on his cheek.
He tried his best not to pull away or look terrified, but she was still so close to his face, so very near him; it was too much for him to handle at once, too many signals his brain couldn't interpret, and he drew in a sharp breath and snapped his head away, a hand going to her shoulder to push her gently from him. He cleared his throat and averted his gaze, afraid that she would see him so scared of her. "I, uh..." he said in a thick voice, though he couldn't even finish his sentence, his nerves were on such edge.

Mikurei listened intently, her brain processing this information slowly as he explained it all. She really hadn't known why it exactly happened, though she knew it happened not only when she was scared but sometimes when she overdid it. She smiled slightly as he explained and nodded a few times to show she was following before she herself leaned forward to thank him. What she hadn't expected was such the harsh reaction to it, maybe a blush, maybe a gentle pull away or something ... but no.
His head snapped to the side after an audible gasp as she felt his hand on her shoulder .. pushing her away and off of his lap, her hum landing on the hard floor as she looked to him and her brows furrowed. Tears threatened to spill though she held them back as she breathed the one word softly, "sorry..." before she looked away, her mouth pulled tightly together and her eyes squinting to try and not let the tears fall as her fingers curled into fists. She let out a small mix between a sigh and a soft cry before she pushed herself up and moved around the counter. Walking towards the front door she got to it and looked out, not seeing the virus left .. or right. She looked back over her shoulder only briefly before pulling the rod that was placed there, she assumed by him, as she leaned it against the wall and went to grab at the door handle.

Hector blinked at her when she said she was sorry, and he wasn't able to tell if it was sincere or not. It wasn't like it mattered - it wasn't her fault, after all. The kiss didn't mean anything to him really except that it was unbelievably personal, something that he had never experienced with a woman before. He had never met a woman who could understand him, and Mikurei didn't seem to be the exception Still, he found it strange that she looked away from him and wouldn't made a sound like a sigh. He wasn't sure how she was feeling, unable to read the emotions that were so plainly written on her face. In the dimness he thought he might've seen a glisten in her eye, but he couldn't be sure. "It ain't..." he started, but he wasn't able to finish that, either.
He didn't quite know how to feel. His nerves were still jangling, the alarm bells singing in his mind, but somehow he could still feel the warmth of her lips pressed against his cheek; it left a slight tingling on his skin, and he found that it was a strange feeling, yet he rather liked it. It was different from the occasional kiss his mother had given him on the forehead when he was little. Surprisingly different, and though he had been so disturbed by it a moment ago now he was more perplexed than anything.
When she stood to leave, Hector didn't realize until she was by the door, going to remove the bar from the handles. He let out a sharp gasp and scrambled to his feet, tripping over himself as he landed next to her in a heap and clatter before he pulled himself up, protesting with a sharp "No!" as he reached for her arm to pull it back. "It's not safe! That...that thing could still be out there." His eyes were wild with fear, sweat beading on his forehead as he searched her eyes for a moment before switching his gaze to the corridor outside their small haven.

"What do you care?!" she bite out between her clenched teeth as she looked over to him as his hand touched her arm and she stepped away from him, jerking her arm away as she looked away from his face. "I was going to lure it away anyway so you could get back to camp," she said softly, though loud enough for him to hear, the second statement a lot softer and laced with hurt trying to be covered up by a smooth voice which she was failing at.
She lifted a hand to use one finger to wipe a line under her eye to catch a stray tear right before it fell as she sniffed. "I'll lead it down the corridor farther and I'll take cover in a shop further down so you can head back the way we came. I'm going to try to get to the one shop they usually dump stuff off in..," she said all the while looking down at her feet. She hadn't wanted to care but it was like a slap in the face to her. She was already sensitive to the way people acted towards her and she pushed people away when they got close because of the fear of something happening like what just happened. Except it's supposed to go on for a little while before they push her away or she gets paranoid that they will and she tries to beat them to it.
She crossed her arms over her stomach as she stayed looking down, her drive to go out there and drive away the monster still there ... sorta of .. but slowly being pushed down as she felt a hot trail of water trail down her opposite cheek. Maybe he .. maybe he wouldn't notice if she turned her head so the tear was on the opposite side that faced him ..

" 'What do I'...what you mean by that? I don't want you to get killed." He stared at her blankly, confused beyond a doubt. He didn't understand why she had raised her voice, doing a quick check list over the 'characteristics of emotions' chart he had made to help him. She sounded angry, and yanking her arm suddenly away from him agreed with that. But then her voice went soft and he could barely hear her, and he was even more confused. So she hadn't been angry, then? Or maybe she had, then...ugh. Women. They were the most confusing people he came in contact with. He saw her wipe at her cheek, figuring she was wiping at a smidge of dirt he'd seen there earlier.
He couldn't believe his ears, though; she wanted to use herself as a distraction! Hector considered it for a moment. It was tempting, to let her lead the virus off while he escaped. He shook his head slightly to himself, knowing that in all of heaven and hell there was no way he could leave a girl alone to fend for himself. Especially since she was, just a few minutes ago, his patient. He couldn't have helped her through her fit and then just let her run off and get herself hurt or possible killed. That was just downright not going to happen! He would stick with her, even if he wasn't much use.
"Nu-uh, no way Mikurei. We's supposed to be a team. That thing killed Dirk dead, and I ain't about to let it do that to you." She turned away from him, and he was tempted to reach out and touch her shoulder; his arm extended, fingers trembling as he reached out...but at the last moment he pulled his hand back slowly, curling his fingers into a fist. It was frustrating, being so afraid of personal contact. It's not like it hurt him...but it was just so uncomfortable and he couldn't face it. He reminded himself of his brother, Redd. But Redd had gotten over it, right? So that meant he could, too. Yeah.
He grit his teeth and placed a hand ever so lightly on her shoulder, a touch so light it would have seemed almost...ethereal. "I ain't about to let you run out there and pass out again, Mikurei." He said softly in a low mumble. "It ain't worth riskin' your life, not for lil' ol me. We'll go together. An' if you feel weak or like you're hurtin," he pulled her so that she would face him, surprised to see a tear trickling down her cheek. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion, lips parting for a moment as if to say something about it. But he shook his head and continued, "If yous hurtin', you tell me straight away. And don't try nuttin' brave."

She just grit her teeth and squeezed her eyes shut as he hopelessly questioned her, not being able to find her voice in that instant as she looked down and away from him now, her pupils barely showing through the slits that her eyes made. She swallowed hard as he went on, protesting the fact that she would give up herself to save him, knowing full well most wouldn't have let her do it -- rather try to be the hero's themselves. She sighed softly, her expression softening from the anger it had once held as she stood there before she felt his hand, ever so gentle, place itself upon her shoulder.
Her eyes widened as she felt his touch, her head turning slightly and eyes darting to the digits that gently grasped her shoulder as she stood there as his words sunk in. More tears threatening to fall as her fingers curled into loose fists as he turned her around, her eyes slowly coming up to meet his, the streak from her tear that fell fresh as she looked up at him. She didn't know what the others problem was, or hers for that matter as she forced a smile to lift the corners of her mouth.
"I have to be brave, don't I? I mean .. one of us has to if we're to get out of here," she said as she lifted a hand, ever so slowly to gently rest over his; a ghost of a touch. "I don't know why I invaded your personal space so irrationally .. I wasn't thinking. I'm sorry." She smiled sadly to him as she then let her hand slip from over his as she looked out into the corridor outside their hiding spot.
"What do you think we shall do, Hector?" she said softly as her eyes scanned the area, her voice soft but steady in the darkness that they stood in. The only outside light being that from the corridor and what the sun cast down upon them through the corridors ceiling. She slowly looked back up to him before she swallowed a bit nervously, "I have to say ... I'm slightly scared that we won't get out of this without a few bruises or scratches ..," she said to him, her voice wavering slightly. 'Or if we'll get out of here at all.. ' she thought solemnly as she felt the ground vibrate slightly and her eyes widened.
She immediately grabbed his arm and pushed him back into the corner they stood by, out of the light and out of line of sight as she pressed against him. Her hand was over his mouth as she had her other hand over her mouth, her pointer finger raised to signal to be quiet as a large shadow blocked out most of the light that was filtered into the store.

Hector watched her face carefully, trying to scrutinize her true thoughts. It was inevitable that he would fail, but he thought he should at least try. He couldn’t understand the emotions, or what he assumed they were, that flitted across her face. He was unsure whether she was angry or sad, terrified or unafraid. He supposed it would be useful to know this information. It sure would’ve made the situation easier to handle, and she wouldn’t be attempting to run out there into the jaws of a beast that had already eaten one of their own. He’d thought at first the girl had had a death-wish, and as a doctor he was unable to allow her to put herself in harm’s way. After all, he would only have to patch her up again!
But her next words made him blink. Bravery? “Cher, there’s brave, then there’s just plain stupid.” He grimaced and realized, maybe, that could’ve come off wrong. “Not that I mean…” he shook his head in frustration, brown curls bouncing. He looked at his feet, unable to muster up the courage to talk again. But then she apologized for the kiss, and his eyes flickered up back to meet hers, briefly. “It ain’t no thing, Mikurei.” He said in a slow drawl, clearing his throat. “I just ain’t used to that sorta thing, no I ain’t.” He followed her gaze out to the hallway, wondering where the creature went. Couldn’t have gone far…maybe it had a short attention span and had already found another poor unfortunate soul to devour. He could picture it crunching through bones and popping eyeballs…a shudder ran down his spine and he gave a sidelong glance at Miku when she spoke again. “I know I’m s’pose to be comfortin’ ‘n all, but I ain’t one fo’ lyin. I gotta say I I’m with you on that ‘un, cher.”
It seemed that the Virus could read their thoughts; for only moments later he saw the shadow, then suddenly Mikurei shoved him into a corner and had her hand over his mouth. Her body was pressed against his and though he strained against her grip for but a moment, her signal to remain quiet stilled him almost instantly. He nodded and his rusty brown eyes flickered to the door, where he could see the beast. Her breath fogged the glass door. The Virus backed up, and for a moment Heck thought she was turning to go—had given up. But in a moment it became clear what the Virus intended. She rocketed forward with a hiss and slammed into the door, and Heck’s body bucked up against Mikurei’s as he jumped from the loud THUD. His arm snaked out to grab the hand on his mouth, and he gripped it tightly. “We gotta get outta here!” he whispered hotly, eyes scanning the room wildly.
The sound of the metal pipe clattering to the floor left his heart in his throat, his head whipping to the side as the Virus backed up again to charge. The pipe that had been barring the door had fallen! The virus was stunned for a moment from the last blow against the door. He played out what would happen—virus would burst in, blocking the exit. She would get them both with her webbing. End of story. Shaking his head, Hector knew he couldn’t let that happen. Mikurei had been willing to go out there by herself. And goddamnit, he was a man. And men were supposed to protect the women. He grabbed Mikurei by the shoulders, only moments to spare, and looked her straight in the eyes. A calmness settled over him, for but a moment.
“Listen. I’ll distract it. When it’s afta me, you gotta run behind it, Mikurei, and go for help. If one of us gotta be brave, it’s gon’ be me.” He said with surprising determination. He let go of her shoulders and ran forward, towards the door with all his speed. He grabbed the metal pipe in his hands and yanked open the door, whistled shrilly and beckoned the beast forward. He stumbled backwards as it screeched, the sound deafening. He shouted back, some guttural, manly sound he didn’t know he could make, and swung his arms wildly to distract it. His eyes darted quickly to Mikurei as the Virus leapt forward, and he shouted “Mikurei, go NOW!” as he bolted for the back of the store. He knew there was no way out, but at least the girl would be safe. At least one person would remember him for more than he was after he was gone. Right?

[atrb=width,450,true][atrb=border,0,true][bg=645994] The sudden thud made her jump as well, her eyes squinting shut as she shivered against Heck, even leaning into him more as she squeaked softly. She bite her lip, telling herself she wouldn't do that again before her head snapped to the side as the pole that had been barring the door closed fell down. Her eyes widened to saucers as her heart-beat quickened rapidly, though Hector's hands on her shoulder brought her back to the real world as she turned to face him.
He spoke to her and she barely registered the words, her heart thudding in her ears as he took off towards the door. Everything happened in slow motion and it seemed to late for her brain to catch up as she lurched towards the door, only to stop as the monstrous spider careened forward into the store as Heck backed up. This couldn't be happening, she had been the one to offer to distract the beast ..
"Mikurei, go NOW!"
She blinked, her heart racing, her mind flying through the thoughts in a millisecond as the spider-woman lurched forward while her mind screamed at her not to let him do this. "HECTOR!!" she screamed, her voice breaking as tears spilled over and down her cheeks before she watched the spider go after him. She let a sob escape her lips as her head whipped back to the door before looking back over her shoulder as her legs took off with a mind of their own.
She bolted from the store and raced down the narrow alleys, her lungs burning as she went, stopping only briefly by the drop-off site to throw as many things inside her knapsack she had on her that she could carry before taking off again. Slower because of the extra weight she pressed on, an arm up to wipe at her eyes as she went, crying as she ran, out of the complex and towards home.
Half-way to her safe-haven her legs gave out, sending her toppling forward as she had tripped over some rubble and undergrowth, her arms catching her fall as she skidded. Her bag a few feet off to the side as she curled up in a ball, her arms pulling her knees up as she buried her face into them. She had watched one of her comrades get pulled away to be eaten, hearing his bones crunch and his screams die short .. only to turn around and watch as another put his life before hers to save her. "Hector," she whispered hoarsely out loud, " ... why?"
"AAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" birds flew from trees overhead as she quieted into muffled sobs.
