“You run like a girl, Carter!” she called over her shoulder, grinning as she dashed through the streets. A gasped curse was her only answer, as footsteps thudded heavily on the ground behind her. Laughing, she whirled around as she came to a sudden halt, breathless but not panting as her companion was. He staggered up beside her, putting his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. Charm eyed him with amusement. “You’re getting soft, Carter. Guard duty is too easy on you. Since when does a little jog like that burn you out?”
He glared at her. “Antoni. Shut up.” The command only made her grin wider. They were off to deliver messages to patrols; her friend would find himself footsore and weary if he didn’t get back into the stride of long distance running.
They had paused on the outskirts of the city before separating to dispatch their respective messages, and rested for a minute in companionable silence until Carter straightened and cast a glance at the sun. It was a beautifully clear day, just warm enough to be comfortable, and the noon sun blazed overhead, unhindered by any cloud. “We gotta get moving.” He grimaced.
Charm flashed him a cheeky grin. “Enjoy your run.” With his discontented grumbling following her, she turned away and shifted, picking up a canter. She ran easily, spirits high with the good weather.
It wasn’t long before she reached the fringes of the Huntingrounds. Slowing, she slid back to her human form and paused to catch her breath, then set off at a lope. She moved into the forest a hundred yards or so, enough to be under cover but not so deep as to run into the cat retros. The patrol had to be close; the prospect of completing her task combined with the dappled sunlight and cheery birdsong had her walking on air. There was a certain delight in working her muscles and watching the ground rush away beneath her feet. She was grinning as she rounded a clump of trees and found herself in the midst of Carna.
“Re skatá!” swore softly, skidding to a halt. She started to turn, to dash back the way she’d come before they knew what had happened, but someone had stepped into her path. Trapped, she recovered quickly, palming the knife she’d moved to her wrist before leaving Fulsi - she had left her other weapons behind, to avoid being weighted down. “Well, damn. This is a predicament. For me, anyway. I don’t suppose you’re celebrating a day of peace or something?” While she spoke, Charm rotated where she stood, calculating her odds, gaze darting as she tried to formulate an escape. They had moved into a circle around her, leaving about three feet between them - not enough space for her to slip through before being caught.
Suddenly she paused, eyebrows shooting up, a grin tugging at her mouth. “Oi, it’s the Bee Boy! Been in any good streams lately?” she asked with wicked humor. Abruptly, her expression switched to a scowl. “You know, it’s really not polite to let a girl walk around with a property label written on her ass when she doesn’t know it. It led to some very awkward conversations on my part.” Glancing over to a girl on her left, Charm jerked a thumb at the blond boy and informed her, “Bashful, this one is.” Turning her gaze back on Lyric, she batted her eyes innocently at him with her sweetest smile. “I like that.” If he stumbled back, she was so going to dash right past him to freedom.
ooc; Re skatá - oh shit! tag; umm. Lyric, Ven, Py, Maddox? I think. xD
Lyric was tagging along with the back of the group, not-so-oddly subdued as he trudged along. He was perfectly aware that it was a sensible idea to go to the Huntingrounds in a group, but that didn’t mean he had to like it. The Scout preferred to when he could go entirely by himself. Now, that wasn’t an option, and he had his hands deep in the pockets of his denim jacket, looking pointedly at his shoes in hope that none of the mischief-making Carna would decide to choose to make him their next game. He’d heard plenty about Pythagoras, and some about Maddox, and he knew Ven in a way. He was still surprised that he had showed up. The last time they’d met each other, he’d been a Fulsi.
It may have even been a bit of a reprieve when they stumbled across another Fulsi, and decided it was in their best interest to surround her. But it seemed as though life was not merciful to Lyric Shikov today… Bee Boy? For a moment, his jaw slackened, then clenched, and his eyes shot up to narrow at the woman before him. Oh. Damn. She was familiar. Definitely familiar, and the memories he had of her brought a slight pink tinge to his face. This is definitely going to be awkward. He was just opening his mouth to reply with a sharp “My name is not Bee Boy!”, but she cut him off abruptly.
“I… I take it someone finally told you about that…” he muttered dryly, his cheeks darkening with each passing moment. The wicked expression on her face was not helping, either. Neither was the fact they were surrounded by Lyric’s ring-mates. Oh, he wouldn’t ever hear the end of this… “I am not bashful—” Ly began unconvincingly, his voice weary. And then, by God, his eyes widened comically and he bit his lip until he tasted blood. He shifted from foot to foot, hands still deep in his pockets, and tried to think of something to say. He really wasn’t coming up with anything sarcastic or witty, either, and for a moment he cursed his pale complexion. Lyric was certain the bright blush was obvious as it spread across his cheekbones...
After a moment, he swore softly in Russian. Well, shit…
occ;; failpost fails *dies* couldn’t think of what else to have him do.
Charm maintained the innocent doe eyes while Lyric squirmed and blushed, then let a sly expression slide across her face. He hadn’t moved, damn him. But she would fix that. She didn’t particularly want to embarrass him, but she had no intention of being captured without a fight. “What, no welcoming hug? I’m hurt, Shikov.” She sauntered up to the Carna, eyelids lowered lazily and with added sway to her hips, deliberately bumping against him. He’d stood his ground, albeit reluctantly, up to that point, but then he finally stepped back. Charm shot for the gap he’d left, hoping he would be far too flabbergasted to worry about grabbing her and that the others were out of reach.
ooc; Kriss - sorry for the PP, let me know if you want it changed! this was just a quick thing to get some action in there. xD
Ven had joined the impromptu group on a whim. He hadn't had anything else to do that afternoon, and the somewhat trite adage of safety being in numbers rang true, even if the motley mixture of individuals in the group weren't normally the sort of company he kept. In fact, he probably wouldn't have gone at all, if he hadn't recognized Lyric. Their last encounter had left a sour taste in his mouth, and petty though it might have been, he couldn't resist the opportunity to rib the other Russian, should it present itself. And so, some hours later, he found himself walking alongside the rest of the group, slightly towards the center. He had been characteristically quiet for most of the walk to the Hunting Grounds, leaving it to the rest to talk amongst themselves. In spite of the fact that he'd been living in the Carna for months, there were days where he still felt oddly out of place.
What was supposed to be a routine hunting expedition, however, took an abrupt and unexpected change minutes later, as Charm came skidding to a graceless stop in the middle of their hunting party. For several tense seconds, it was difficult to say which of them was more startled--the Fulsi who suddenly found herself in the midst of a group of Carna, or the members of the group itself. Even Ven's eyes widened, though the gesture was subtle, before narrowing a second later at the familiar banter between Lyric and Charm.
"Someone you know?" his voice was low, his tone wry. It was less of a question, and more of a thinly veiled accusation. But whatever annoyance he felt at the interruption soon gave way to amusement, as the discussion between them grew heated. A smirk tugged its way onto his lips. The slight inconvenience that the woman had created was worth the look of utter mortification on Lyric's face--made all the more priceless by the slow flush spreading across his cheeks. His enjoyment of the other Russian's discomfort was cut short seconds later however, when Charm suddenly forced a gap in their defense.
"Idiot!" he snapped. The word left his mouth as a sharp scoff, said unthinkingly. The fact that Lyric would hardly take kindly to the hastily delivered insult didn't seem to bother Ven, as he pivoted sharply on his own heel, his motions swift in a way that only years of honing his reflexes could be. He moved to block Charm's path once again, the index finger of his right hand smoothly sliding into the grooved, hidden locking mechanism of his wrist blades, curving around them and engaging the blade.
"Going somewhere, Fulsi?" he demanded, bringing the blade up to bear so that it was level with her eyesight, and merely inches from her throat.
Ooc: Crap post is crap. BUT OHO, LY. Soon your virgin lips shall be all Ven's. >D
What better way to spend a nice day than to go traipsing through the forest and brush where man-eating tigers and lions lurked? Pythagoras could think of no better option, and so both he and Maddox had joined up with another two members of the Carna in order to do exactly that. While he didn’t know the others particularly well, they seemed alright, albeit a bit quiet. That was probably a good thing, given the near-constant stream of muttered chatter that he kept up with his friend in order to keep themselves entertained, which more than made up for the silence of the two men behind them.
“So then I tell Keelan, ’Well if you’re not going to make your move on her soon, I’m just going to have to do it for you.’ Should’ve seen his face, I’ve never seen a kid run so fast to find their crush before I could. Of course, that was all part of the plan, I barely even followed him.” A grin slid on to Py’s face as he cast a sidelong glance at Maxy, laughter coloring his tones. “The boy’s got to learn somehow.” It was all very true though. Playing shy would get him nothing, and since Py was his mentor, he didn’t see why he shouldn’t help him out with other issues as well, this included. Besides, he was already turning out to be a very decent hunter, and Py would’ve brought the tenderfoot along with them if not for that unfortunate accident. "He...well, he accidentally tripped and fell in one of the latrines, though, while he was running. Messy, that, poor boy. Probably still cleaning himself up as we speak. So, he didn't get her this time. But we're working on it."
The conversation was abruptly cut off, however, when the hunter suddenly lifted his head, testing scents on the wind that were being carried towards them. Although he couldn’t smell anything, yet, he could have sworn he’d heard something, and he glanced around the forested area they were in briefly before shrugging it off. Still, the knife at his belt was a comforting weight, and he slid it out to carry it instead, just to be on the safe side. He had good reason to be wary, when the retromorph cats were so prone to finding the visitors that were on their territory.
Of course, he hadn’t been completely cracked out of his mind when it came to hearing things, as evidenced when a girl came skidding right amidst their group, smelling strong of Fulsi. Nose wrinkling in distaste, he and the rest of the group crowded around her, blocking her escape. When he heard what she was saying, however, he couldn’t help but crack a grin, flashing Lyric a sly look and ribbing Maddox playfully before wriggling his eyebrows mockingly at the blond. “Someone’s been busy.” And then there was a scuffle as the girl tried to make a breakaway, only to be blocked by Ven, who proceeded to threaten her.
With a good natured grin Py slunk forwards to snake an arm around her waist from behind, the only gesture of a threat being the fact that his fingers dug a touch too tightly into her side, and that he never put his knife away. “I’m sure she’ll behave and stay put. After all,” he tugged her a bit closer. “If she doesn’t, she’d make some retro mighty happy. Although, she‘s a bit on the slender side.” His tone was joking, but the warning still hung thick in the air, and he glanced briefly over at Lyric before shifting his gaze back to her. “So you know Shikov, eh?” he mused, before a growl rumbled in his chest at a sudden thought, his blade lifting slightly. “Got any Fulsi companions around that we should know about, love?”
ooc; ;-; long overdue, sorry guys. If I need to add/edit, lemmeknow <3
Her dash for freedom was brought up short as she caught herself before slamming into the blade that appeared at her throat. She straightened and slid a sideways look at the Carna that had put it there, measuring and assessing. At his question, she looked up at him, expression open and perfectly charming even as she remained poised for flight. “Who, me? Whatever would give you such an insane idea? This is where the fun is, right?”
Fun for them, anyway. She would be perfectly happy to be elsewhere, and it was obvious Shikov felt the same. As expected, the others jumped to conclusion that their relationship had been far more developed than that of a freak accident. Not that she had done anything to curb this line of thought. The more their attention was focused on their ringmate, the better it was for her. Their automatic reaction would be to sort out whatever was going on, and anything that bought her time to think was welcome.
She risked a brief glance at Lyric. Particularly since she had embarrassed him, Charm wasn’t inclined to believe he would put in a good word for her. And even if they had parted from their last meeting with any degree of affection, it was logical to assume that he still wouldn’t speak up, for fear of retaliation from his ringmates. Thankfully, they didn’t seem excessively eager to kill her. At least, they hadn’t gone for her throat the instant she came into sight. For the moment they seemed content to crowd her.
While Charm had been considering her situation, a stocky, pink-haired man had sauntered over to her. As he snuck an arm around her waist, she gave him her attention, gaze politely interested, tactfully ignoring the threat. “You could say that I know him, in the loosest sense of the word,” she agreed conversationally. Her encounter with the Russian had been brief and terribly ridiculous, but they didn’t need to know the full details right away. Lyric certainly wasn’t likely to tell them, not when the answer was so humiliating. “Got any Fulsi companions around that we should know about, love?” The last word was the one that caused her eyebrow to raise. “It’ll be a cold day in hell before I’m your ‘love,’ sweetling.” A light tap on the Carna’s nose with her forefinger accompanied the mild admonishment.
While she lightly deflected the question, her mind raced. Technically, there was a Fulsi patrol near by - she’d been in the process of delivering a message to them - but she had no idea how close they were. In a situation like this, the difference of half a mile could have huge consequences. The question was, to answer yes or no? Would it make a difference? They might try to kill her either way. Would they even believe any answer that she could give? Even if she told them there wasn’t a patrol, they’d still be suspicious, and therefor have an element of surprise if it came to conflict. Although, neither group was trespassing on the other’s land, so maybe they would avoid each other. Not likely, though. Rampant hate tended to override reason.
No, it was best to stay mute on the matter. Let them wonder. She would distract the overly friendly pink-haired Carna from his quest for information. She leaned casually against the support he offered, resting an elbow on his shoulder in such a manner that would allow her to slam her forearm against his throat if the situation called for. “You folks out to antagonize the kitties? It’s a beautiful day for it.” She beamed at the Carna around her, sharply aware of the sleek gleam of blades held inches from her unprotected skin.
