The keepers are such assholes, was Py’s only thought, as he fell through the air and landed roughly on his shoulder, the sand around him tossed up upon impact. Thankfully, he managed not to crack his head on any of the large and very jagged rocks scattering the beach and, from the looks of it, the loose sand had saved him from a worse fall. Least they dropped me back in Carna though, for once. Still, assholes. His shoulder was sore, but by some miracle, it remained unbroken, and he carefully rolled himself up to sit, testing his joints to be sure that everything else was intact. Once satisfied, he pushed himself to his feet and glanced around.
It was nightfall, and he could hear the waves lapping lazily against the sides of the boats tied out near the docks, making them creak; a crescent moon hung in the sky, clouds drifting to cover it occasionally. In the distance there was a crackle, and he jerked his head to stare, catching sight of the bright flames of a bonfire as it spit sparks into the air. There were people milling about or sitting around or near it, and he headed towards it, shoes dragging and full of sand. He wasn’t sure how long he’d been gone – or rather, how long he’d been thought dead for – but he was fairly certain that quite a few people were going to get a surprise that night. And as he neared closer, dim light cast upon one particular person that he would’ve recognized anywhere. A grin tugged at the corner of his mouth as he hurried closer, trying to move quietly so she wouldn’t suspect.
Maddox, of course. He’d missed her like hell while he was in the cages, and he was willing to wager a bet that she’d missed him too. And that she’d probably punch him for going missing like he had. Nevertheless, he was eager to greet her. She was sitting some distance from the fire, chatting with a small group of people. His friend had never shared his love for fire, and he’d come to suspect that she either feared or hated it. While he couldn’t understand it, given his alarming obsession with it, he’d never pushed her about the subject and simply accepted it as fact. The lack of general light near her proved to be highly useful in his efforts of sneaking up to her, and when one person from the group noticed him, their face going slack in surprise, he put a finger to his lips. Luckily, they obliged, and he was able to come up behind her and cover a hand over her eyes, the other arm wrapping around her shoulders. “Guess who decided to come back to the land of the living,” he chirped enthusiastically. “I think you’ll only need one guess, but you best make it count.”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 498px; height: 498px; background-image:url(http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x363/DoomBunniBins/tables/nicmb4-1.png)] She was just far enough from the bonfire that the heat could wash over her face and bare feet, chasing the slight chill of the spring night away. She'd just finished off a kebab of small fish that had been roasted over the flames when Warren, sitting across from her, got a most peculiar look on his face. Weirder than usual, anyways. "What are you gawking at?" She snapped, though the bite was affectionate.
And then familiar hands pressed gently over her eyes and tight around her shoulders in a hug. Py's cheeky voice made tears spring to her eyes as she twisted around in his arms, and slapped him soundly across the cheek. "YOU JERK! I see you bleeding everywhere, then we turn around and you're gone!" She slapped him again, this time on the chest, before kissing him on both cheeks and dragging him into a bone-breaking hug. "That blue-haired idiot said he saw you in the labs, but he didn't know anything useful! Are you okay?! You look terrible!"
He really did, though it wasn't commonplace to come out of the labs looking like a supermodel. He smelled, too, like antiseptic, blood, and chemicals. With a wriggle she freed herself, leaning back to give him a critical look, certainly not giving him a chance to talk yet. "Well obviously we need to feed you, you're pale and pathetic and skinny. WARREN!" The scout nearly jumped out of his skin from his half-doze, blue eyes wide as he ogled them in a slightly traumatized manner whilst she pointed at Py. "Go get a double, the man is starving to death." Her former tenderfoot had the good sense and charity to roll to his feet with a lazy salute, grin, and wander over toward the fire where he could wheedle a decent meal out of the night's cook.
And with all the subtlety of a spotlight her attention fell back on Py. She'd been mad with worry about his short, stupid ass for over a week. Getting straight up mauled by one of those freak monsters, the disease setting in, then the Keepers taking him.... no one had been sure if they were going to help him, or study his death. To call her relieved would be like to referring to the bonfire as a spark. He'd been her first friend in the misery that was the dome, and she'd come to love him like a brother. Which didn't for a second mean she wouldn't beat him senseless if he tried to argue the meal; thicker a man she had never encountered.

He’d been expecting it. He deserved it. And hell if he minded, even as his cheek reddened from the sting of her palm, because he had missed her so very much. Already, Py was enveloping her in a tight hug, pressing his lips to her hair in an affectionate kiss as she simultaneously chewed him out and worried over him. Not that he could blame her for that either – he felt about as awful as he probably looked, but the dizzy relief from being back at Carna, being back with his friend, overrode his concern for his personal health. Reaching over, he gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear in a small attempt to reassure her that everything was fine, everything would be okay. The world had stopped shifting under his feet; for now, at least.
The man let her appraise him with all the good-naturedness of a long lost pet that had just returned home, and was wise enough to hold his tongue when she hollered at the scout he recognized as her former apprentice. He raised a hand in cheerful greeting as the scout departed, and then focused back on her, a smile working its way on to his face once she fell quiet. Py stepped back up to her, hands resting lightly on her shoulders. “I’m alright, it’s okay. I know, I’m sorry all this happened,” He floundered slightly, searching for the right words, “But I’m fine now. They patched me up, look, see?” The man lifted his shirt, revealing both fresh scars and smoothed over skin. “Better than I expected – thought they’d turn me into Frankenstein’s monster or something.” He paused at that, considering his words actually carried a lick of truth. They’d done something to him, and it was rather monstrous. Or more-like, he was now. It was very strange, very bizarre.
That particular train of thought would have to wait though. A plate of food was pushed into Py’s unsuspecting hands, and his stomach roared in eager anticipation as he thanked the retreating scout. A flush creeped up his neck, and he found himself rubbing the back of it in embarrassment. “They didn’t feed me much, though. Or at all, really.” Indeed, he’d lost several pounds while in the cage, and from the rigorous workouts they’d made him do. His shirt and pants felt rather loose on his typically stocky frame; he’d have to wash them both vigorously later, considering the stench of the labs. And he was hungry, though his body seemed to agree that Max’s description of ‘starving’ was far more accurate.
He beckoned her over to where she’d been sitting, and perched beside her, pressed up comfortably as he ate and tried not to look like a barbaric caricature of Carna (that is, the stereotype the other rings held them by). Once the hunger began to feel sated, he spoke up again. “The blue-haired idiot was in the cage next to me. We uh…kind of had an argument. Maybe that’s why he didn’t say much.” He shrugged a shoulder as he poked a piece of fish on the plate; it was not a subject he wanted to talk about right then. Thinking about Tain would only bring back the whirltide of emotions he’d experienced earlier, and he wanted to avoid them for now. So he changed the subject altogether. “How’re things here? …and more importantly..how are you?” The hunter had been worried about her during his stay at the labs – though he knew she was more than capable of fending people off, he’d had a constant and strong desire to keep her safe by any means necessary ever since their initial meeting. Some creep had tried to hit on her their first week in the dome, and wouldn’t back off. So Py broke his face. The incident had certainly helped to contribute to the makings of a wonderful friendship between the pair, amongst other things that had happened; in any case, they both knew they had each other’s backs, through hell or high water. He could only hope that she was doing alright too, despite the grief he had caused her.
“You have any idea how much I missed you?” His tone was gentle, teasing, but it carried weight all the same, and he wrapped an arm around her shoulders again in a one-armed hug. Of course she knew.
